ABSTRACT
The study on coral reef rehabilitation in the Andaman coast of Thailand was
initiated by the Marine and Coastal Biology and Ecology Unit of the Phuket Marine
Biological Center (PMBC) in 1994. The study was conducted at Maiton Island in Phuket
province; it now serves as PMBC’s demonstration site for coral rehabilitation study.
Objectives of the study are to discover effective methods to rehabilitate degraded
coral reefs in Thai waters and to disseminate the knowledge got from the project to other
organizations. In the beginning of the project, two research schemes were employed. First,
the provision of artificial substrate for natural coral recruitment, using different shapes of
concrete cylinders to test their relative effectiveness in enhancing the natural recruitment of
corals. The number of colonies and the percentage and diversity of surviving corals were
significantly higher on the high-complexity artificial substrates than on the less complex
ones. The second scheme was the transplantation of different species of coral. The survival
and the growth rate of transplanted coral depend on various environmental factors, e.g.
current, sedimentation, suspended solid, type of substrate, and the absence of grazers. The
results and the techniques from both studies are now widely used for coral rehabilitation in
the Andaman coast of Thailand.
The PMBC also hosted several meetings to disseminate the concept of coral
rehabilitation; to provide a forum for scientists to share and exchange knowledge, ideas
and experiences; and to brainstorm ideas on criteria to be followed in restoration of coral
reefs in Thai waters. We disseminate knowledge, through posters, lectures and exhibitions,
on coral biology and marine conservation to increase awareness of the importance of coral
reefs, and to activate public participation in coral reef protection and conservation.
Key words: coral; coral rehabilitation; Andaman Sea
