3.  Established in 1948, the American Board of Preventive
Medicine certifies physicians in occupational medicine,
aerospace medicine, and in public health and general
preventive medicine. In addition, the ABPM issues
certifications in the subspecialties of undersea and
hyperbaric medicine, and medical toxicology.
Candidates for certification must be graduates of
accredited medical schools and licensed physicians in
good standing, and are generally required to complete a
year of postgraduate clinical training, usually termed an
internship, at a teaching hospital or similar facility, followed
by at least two years of training in the specific specialty.
They must also complete specified post-graduate
coursework at the master’s or doctoral level.

4.  Of the three certifications offered by ABPM,
occupational medicine is the only one that
concentrates on the health of workers with respect to
their occupations and workplaces. It includes the
various environments of the workplace, including
biological, chemical, and physical considerations, as
well as the social environment, as well as the health
outcomes for exposures to these various variables.
Occupational medicine specialists promote health-
friendly practices in the workplace, the prevention of
workplace injuries due to environmental exposure or
accidents. They are also well-versed in issues related
to liability and workers’ compensation, and may be
engaged as independent medical examiners in such
cases.
