Shuji Nakamura is a Japanese-American engineer and inventor known for inventing the blue LED. Along with Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano, he received the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for developing efficient blue LEDs. Blue LEDs enabled the development of bright, energy-saving white LEDs by combining blue light with phosphors or using red, green, and blue LEDs. The widespread use of white LEDs for lighting could lead to significant energy savings worldwide since LEDs require much less energy than traditional light bulbs.
