Blood is composed of cells suspended in plasma. The three main types of cells are red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Red blood cells carry oxygen and carbon dioxide, white blood cells fight infection, and platelets help with clotting to stop bleeding. All blood cells are produced through hematopoiesis, a process where stem cells in the bone marrow differentiate into mature blood cells.
