1. BLEPHARITIS

2.  Blepharities :- It is acute or chronic
inflammation of the lids margins.

3. Types of blepharities
 A) Bacterial blepharities
 B) Seborrhoeic or squamous blepharities
 C) Posterior blepharities
 D) Parasitic blepharities
 All this type is discuss as given below


4. ETIOLOGY :-
 Bacterial infection
 Chronic conjunctivitis
 Contact lens solutions
 Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
 Eye makeup
 Dandruff on scalp
 Eyelids Allergies
 Parasites

5.  TYPE :-
 1) SQUAMOUS BLEPHARITIS :-
 It is due to abnormal metabolism and
seborrhoea.
 It is usually associated with dandruff of scalp.
 Numerous white coloured small scales
accumulate among the eyelashes.
 The eyelashes fall out readily but are replaced
without distoration.
 On removal of the scales,the underlying
surface is hypermic

6.  2) ULCERATIVE BLEPHARITIS :-
 It is an infective conditions.
 The yellow crusts glue the lashes together
 On removing the crust, there is small ulcers
seen around the base of the lashes.
 It may be bleed easily.
 The eyelashes fall out being replaced by
misdirected lashes

7. Symptoms :-
 Chronic irritation
 Mild photophobia
 Itching
 Mild discomfort
 Whitish material at lids margins.
 Falling of eyelashes
 Burning
 Mild lacrimation

8. Signs :-
 Yellow crusts
 Small ulcers on removing crusts.
 Hypermia
 Accumulation of white dandruff like scales on
lashes.
 Lid margin is thickened
 Papillary conjuctivitis
 Lice is on the lashes

9. Complications :-
 Trichiasis
 Poliosis
 Madarosis
 Tylosis
 Epiphora
 Tear film instability :- dry eye
 Marginal keratities
 Recurrent styes
 Conjunctivities
 Chalazion

10. Treatments :-
 A) Lid hyegine (twice daily ) –
 -Warm compress
 - Crust removal (3% sodium bicarbonate)
 - avoid rubbing of eyes
 - Baby samphoo
 - Removal of lashes with forceps
 B) Antibiotics :-
 -Eye ointment :-
 - Eye drops :- Erythromycin/doxicycline/2-3
times a days

11.  C) topical steroids :-
 - Fluoromethalone
 D) Ocular lubricants
 E) Correction of refractive errors
 F) avoid kajal and hair oil
 G) Diet :- vitamin and omega -3 fatty acid
supplement
