Blended Learning - Examples from UCT (2015)

No. of students Sem 2, 2014: 1,400 students Summer term: 70 students Sem 1, 2015: 300 students Face-to-Face 1 short workshop (1 hour) 1 long workshop (2 hours) Subset of quiz questions (6%) Online All study content (incl. video) 45 Quizzes 3 Class tests Based on 10 hours of work per a week! 2 work units/week
  • 4. Important role of tutors Use of forums “Ask your tutor” (supervised by lecturers) linked from Lessons anywhere on page Use of screencast-o- matica Training done with tutors Tutors display a lot of effort and receive great reviews 
  • 5. Use of the Q&A tool Q&A was originally anonymous, but was abused Specific Q&A for admin queries (embedded iFrame with Web Content tool) Needed to insert complex tables as images
  • 6. Video content 25 video tutorials, 12-20 min long, made through GetSmarter Chapterised Incorporated Hapyak for quizzes within videos (license cost, alternative: Zaption) Short workshops also recorded with Matterhorn
  • 7. Resources  Finding big venues for workshops and tests  Re-training of admin staff necessary to hanle tech. queries  Constant online queries & expectation to respond Students  Initial resistance to lack of lectures  Issues of digital literacy and time management  Can monitor students. Followed up with about 50 students last semester- motivate to get DP and do Summer term Design, usability  Creating MCQs test takes more time and is more complex.  Prerequistes removed from quizzes  Improvement: customisation of fonts/background in Lessons  Improvement: Progress bar in Lessons? Challenges
