These are the slides for the online Town Hall for the University of Oklahoma community to discuss the recommendation of the Provost Advisory Committee for Learning Technologies concerning the future of the Learning Management System at OU.
2. Lessons Learned the Hard Way
OU was using Blackboard and WebCT in the early 2000’s
In Fall 2004, Blackboard had a two week outage leaving OU
without access
OU moved to Desire2Learn in Fall 2005
3. The Rise of Mobile
OU Digital Initiative Student Survey (Spring 2013) found that:
87% of OU students owned Smart Phones, 41% tablets
80% wanted to access Learning Management System
75% wanted to check grades with Smart Phone
97% reported that the LMS was important to their academic success
Could we find an LMS that could increase Grades usage and
provide a Mobile experience for students?

6. Final Decision: Wait & See…
End of Pilot Decision in Summer 2014
• Stay with what we have, for now
• Add 24/7 Top Tier support from D2L
• Re-Evaluate LMS options in 2015-16
7. Change is Imminent
Desire2Learn informed OU they will end-of-upgrades
for on premise instances in Summer 2016
Desire2Learn’s goal for 2016 is to move 75% of the
on-premises installations to their cloud hosted service
Anticipated end-of-support for next upgrade
Summer 2018
OU runs D2L on our own servers. D2L will support last upgrade, July 4 2016, for 2 years.
8. Why not D2L in-the-cloud?
• Data Access Concerns
Sharing data with strategic partners
Currently, data integrations are on hold
• Loss of Control for timing of upgrades
• Extra Expense, with no gain in function
D2L in-the-cloud is the same as D2L hosted by OU
9. LMS Evaluation
Provost Advisory Committee for Learning Technologies Criteria
• User Experience
• Mobile
• Open Data
• Reliable & Tested
Desire2Learn (BrightSpace)
• User Experience - incremental changes to UI since 2014
• Mobile - browser based with limited Mobile app functions
• Open Data - access to limited data with REST-like APIs began late 2015
• Reliable & Tested - been used at OU since 2005, with minimal down time
10. Viable Options
PACLT started evaluating LMS options in the Fall 2015

as D2L

Requires Google Apps for Education
Future Uncertain
11. Who is Changing?
32% of U.S. News & World Report Top 25 University have
moved to Canvas in the past two years.

course notifications
Notifications
For Faculty, a
notification is sent
when you post an
announcement or
change a due date
in the calendar
15. Students have their
own calendar and
can enter their own
calendar items

Scheduler to create
time blocks when
Students can
schedule their
own appointments
16. Student Empowerment
Notifications – Students choose the communication method (e-mail, text, Facebook, Twitter) and the
frequency (ASAP, daily, weekly) they prefer. Choice improves engagement and responsiveness.
Calendar focused on Students – Students can add entries into their personal calendar, can schedule
appointments within Faculty selected time blocks, and can send a iCal feed so they can interact with
the calendar app of their choose.
Student Creators – Students have the same Rich Content Editor as Instructors, including video and
audio. Student becomes a collaborator in their learning.
Tools to Collaborate – Students have access to tools to enable them to collaborate with other
students, such as web conferencing, conversations, chats, collaborations, files, groups, and courses.
“What-If” Scores – Ever wondered what you might need to make on an Exam to make a certain
grade in a Course? “What-if” scores allow you to try out different grades to see the impact on your
final grade in a course.
17. What would a LMS change mean?
• User-Friendly Design, saves Faculty and Students time
• Fully Mobile Experience
• Full control of our Data
• Instructor-level third-party app integration to empower
Faculty choice
18. Plan for Change
• Migrate to Canvas in during 2016-17
• Provide Migration Assistance
• Run Side-by-Side D2L and Canvas Learning Management
Systems in 2016-17 to allow Faculty to transition on a
schedule that fits their needs
• Commitment to stay with new LMS for 5 years
lmsevaluation.teachou.net
19. Tentative Plan for Migration

• Faculty will see their old courses with the content within Canvas
Transformative Teaching Fellows -
• Team of Graduate students to assist with migration
• Provide one-on-one assistance for Faculty
• Graduate Students from a range of disciplines to help provide
contextual assistance to Faculty
20. Tentative Timeline for Migration
If accepted
• April 2016: Demo Courses for Faculty and Students
• May 2016: Access to Canvas and Training for migration teams
