This document discusses the approach to patients presenting with bleeding disorders. It outlines that the pattern of bleeding and presence of "red flags" should be determined. The pattern of bleeding can help narrow the possible causes, which include vascular defects, platelet defects, or coagulation defects. Red flags indicating a need for immediate resuscitation include dizziness, shock, coma, hypovolemia, postural hypotension, oliguria, or central nervous system bleeding. A thorough history, examination, and laboratory workup are recommended to diagnose the specific bleeding disorder.
