This document summarizes a lecture on bioethics and human enhancement in sports. It discusses issues like gene doping, the use of prosthetics by Paralympic athletes, and the debate around allowing human enhancement technologies in sports. Specific cases examined include the genetically modified athlete, Oscar Pistorius who campaigned to compete in the Olympics with prosthetic legs, and the future of anti-doping efforts in regulating human enhancement in sports.

Analysed and interpreted the key issues associated with the challenges and benefits of sport participation by aged participants. Reviewed and understood the mechanisms that explain life-span motor development and impairment and consider their value in the design and delivery of sport and physical activity participation opportunities. Also I adopted a critical approach to the evaluation of knowledge in the area of life-span motor development and impairment by interrogating its methodological and conceptual robustness. Finally I applied my knowledge from life-span motor development and impairment to sport and practitioner contexts.

Armstrong, Neil et al. “Aerobic Fitness and Its Relationship to Sport, Exercise Training and Habitual Physical Activity During Youth.” British journal of sports medicine 45.11 (2011): 849–858. Web.
AIMTo analyse aerobic fitness and its relationship with sport participation, exercise training and habitual physical activity (HPA) during youth. METHODSStudies were located through computer searches of Medline, SPORT Discus and personal databases. Systematic reviews of time trends in aerobic fitness/performance, and exercise training and peak oxygen uptake (peak VO(2)) are reported. RESULTSPeak VO(2) increases with age and maturation. Boys' peak VO(2) is higher than girls'. Despite data showing a decrease in performance test estimates of aerobic fitness there is no compelling evidence to suggest that young people have low levels of peak VO(2) or that it is declining over time. The primary time constant of the VO(2) kinetics response to moderate and heavy intensity exercise slows with age and the VO(2) kinetics response to heavy intensity exercise is faster in boys. There is a negative correlation between lactate threshold as a percentage of peak VO(2) and age but differences related to maturation or sex remain to be proven. Young athletes have higher peak VO(2), a faster primary time constant and accumulate less blood lactate at the same relative exercise intensity than their untrained peers. Young people can increase their peak VO(2) through exercise training but a meaningful relationship between aerobic fitness and HPA has not been demonstrated. CONCLUSIONSDuring youth the responses of the components of aerobic fitness vary in relation to age, maturation and sex. Exercise training will enhance aerobic fitness but a relationship between young people's current HPA and aerobic fitness remains to be proven.

Concussions in professional sports have received increased attention, which is partly attributable to evidence that found concussion incidence rates were much higher than previously thought (Echlin et al. Journal of Neurosurgical Focus 29:1–10, 2010). Further to this, professional hockey players articulated how their concussion symptoms affected their professional careers, interpersonal relationships, and qualities of life (Caron et al. Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology 35:168–179, 2013). Researchers are beginning to associate multiple/repeated concussions with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a structural brain injury that is characterized by tau protein deposits in distinct areas of the brain (McKee et al. Brain 136:43–64, 2013). Taken together, concussions impact many people in the sporting community from current and former professional athletes and their fam ...

Steroids as rejuvenating and anti aging agent
Specific Aims
The world of professional sports is burdened with concerns of athletes looking to gain a competitive advantage through the utilization of performance improving drugs. In most instances, the drugs of selection are anabolic steroids like testosterone. In latest years, steroid accusations have been created about Lance Armstrong, Jose Canseco, Barry Bond and countless others. At the same time, a valid scientific literature has investigated the possible clinical usefulness of steroid supplementation/ replacement for a number of conditions for instance hypogonadism, Alzheimer’s disease as well an involvement against physically occurring declines in production of androgen associated with aging. This account by Brown-Séquard is an ultimate classic where the author takes part in self-experimentation to survey whether management of extracts from the animal testicles may positively impact several of the faculties and abilities that he observes have been declining with age. Brown-Séquard, noting down these deficiencies like forgetfulness, fatigue and constipation uses a particular logic, mistaken as we might now know it to be. He shortly reports significant changes in his stamina, his intellect and his powers of urination and defecation.
The specific aim of this proposal is to evaluate whether steroids are a rejuvenating or anti aging agent. As a result of the long history of research and interest in the causes of gonadal steroids on individual behavior, these ideas are at the basis of the steroid outrages that afflict so much of qualified sports; an area of concern to a lot of students. Second this proposal aims at providing a rich proposal with which to start discussing concerns of clinical trials and experimental design.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Moving from philosophical questions about the environment and ecosystem, this lecture explores a different form of biological concern – that of human biology – and how it is contextualised within the philosophy of Olympism. It also connects these concerns with the broader project of bioethics, which has found recent attention from work within anti-doping. Various issues are considered, from the prospect of gene doping to bionic prosthesis, described in the recent case of Oscar Pistorius, the South African disabled sprinter who campaigned to compete in the Olympics, rather than the Paralympics. Drug testing and legal sanctions are intended to be deterrents but have little effect on most children and adolescents involved in sports. Young men and women who are not competitive athletes but who are obsessed with body image and who train intensely primarily to improve their physique are also more likely to use performance- enhancing substances. 2005

Nowhere are these transformations more pronounced and more advanced than in the world of elite sport.
DEA nets largest steroid bust By Dick Patrick, USA TODAY The case has everything but big names — so far. The largest steroid bust in U.S. history took 18 months, involved nine other countries and included raids on 56 drug labs that resulted in the confiscation of 11.4 million doses of steroids and the development of a database of thousands of customers. Don't count on big names being exposed in the near future by the Drug Enforcement Administration, which spearheaded Operation Raw Deal. Will the DEA eventually share info with major sports organizations?"We don't know yet," DEA spokesman Rusty Payne said. "It's going to take time to work these issues out. We're still evaluating what the heck we have. "Everybody's hung up on names, I realize, but these are decisions that just aren't going to be made in the next 48 hours or the next week, really.” David Howman, the director general of the World Anti-Doping Agency, and Travis Tygart, the CEO of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, said they were confident of U.S. government cooperation, based on past experience, including the BALCO doping case. More than MLB, the NFL or Olympics, the DEA is focused on China. "We're targeting the source of supply for all the steroids and human growth hormone in the U.S., and 99.9% of it is coming from China," Payne said. Chinese authorities have shut down one lab. The DEA has given China information on 37 other companies supplying banned performance-enhancing drugs. "We decided rather than indicting these companies and publicly naming them, it would be more productive to work with the Chinese," Payne said. "The cooperation has been unprecedented. I'm not going to say China is shut down. We've got a lot more to do." The repercussions of Raw Deal could be felt for years. "We have a huge amount of names to go through," Payne said. "We've intercepted hundreds of thousands of e-mails. We've infiltrated the underground steroid market in the U.S. We have names, labs, sources of supply — every step of the chain from China to the U.S." Steroid expert Gary Wadler said the bust indicates "how pervasive" steroids are: "This goes beyond elite sport. The magnitude of the problem is huge." Contributing: Donna Leinwand

How does this fundamentally transform its relationship to the Olympic Movement - it is now a stakeholder, perhaps the primary stakeholder it is governed by making good television, but this only partially coheres with reporting the news In fact the Games time media is predominantly not a news media, but a sport media. However, in Beijing this year, the BBC news anchor will be there
