3. What are steroids?
• Steroid: One of a large
group of chemical
substances classified by
a specific carbon
structure.
• All steroids are derived
from cholesterol.

4. How does steroids work?
• Steroids are a man-made version of hormones
normally produced by the adrenal glands, testes,
ovaries.
•Steroids work by decreasing inflammation and
reducing the activity of the immune system.
Steroids are used to treat a variety of
inflammatory diseases and conditions.

5. How are steroids given?
•Steroid drugs are available in several forms that vary
in how easily they dissolve or how long they stay in
the body.
•Steroids may be given systemically, or locally to the
precise place where a problem exists.
•Systemic steroids can be given either through a vein ,
into a muscle, or by mouth . Local steroids can be
given as eye drops, ear drops, and skin creams, or by
direct injection into joints, or around tendons and other
soft tissue areas.

had taken anabolic steroid THG.
•Any medals he had won since mid-2002, when he
first admitted using THG, were taken from him. He
was also asked to pay back any earnings he had made
in his athletic career during the time he was taking the
drugs.

at Helsinki in 2005, was banned for 4 years after he
had been tested positive for testosterone.
• He previously had been give a one-year ban for
testing positive for amphetamines.
