The Big Dig was the largest and most complex highway project in US history, aimed at solving Boston's traffic problems and reconnecting downtown to waterfront towns. It involved constructing 7.8 miles of highway with 161 lanes miles through tunnels under the city. Over its construction from 1982 to 2007, it used over 3.8 million cubic yards of concrete and excavated 16 million cubic yards of soil. The $22 billion project employed thousands of workers but faced construction issues like leaks in the tunnels that killed one person, as well as cost overruns that caused taxpayers to fund half the project. Difficulties included encountering more landfill debris and archaeological finds than expected during tunneling through the downtown area.
