(3) Follow the content: where your information is used beyond the touch points of publishing and research
With examples from the front lines of publishers and information providers, this session will discuss how these strategies are allowing organizations to reinvent themselves in the continuing digital revolution and bringing new vitality to the ever changing role of publisher and information provider.
De Gruyter selected MarkLogic for their Next Generation publishing platform in 2010. Many of the world’s leading publishing houses are customers of MarkLogic, e.g. Elsevier, WILEY, Oxford University Press, Springer etc.
Using Machine Learning at Scale: A Gaming Industry Experience!Databricks
Games earn more money than movies and music combined. That means a lot of data is generated as well. One of the development considerations for ML Pipeline is that it must be easy to use, maintain, and integrate. However, it doesn’t necessarily have to be developed from scratch. By using well-known libraries/frameworks and choice of efficient tools whenever possible, we can avoid “reinventing the wheel”, making it flexible and extensible.

Open Analytics 2014 - Pedro Alves - Innovation though Open SourceOpenAnalytics Spain
Delivering the Future of Analytics: Innovation through Open Source Pentaho was born out of the desire to achieve positive, disruptive change in the business analytics market, dominated by bureaucratic megavendors offering expensive heavy-weight products built on outdated technology platforms. Pentaho’s open, embeddable data integration and analytics platform was developed with a strong open source heritage. This provided Pentaho a first-mover advantage to engage early with adopters of big data technologies and solve the difficult challenges of integrating both established and emerging data types to drive analytics. Continued technology innovations to support the big data ecosystem, have kept customers ahead of the big data curve. With the ability to drastically reduce the time to design, develop and deploy big data solutions, Pentaho counts numerous big data customers, both large and small, across the financial services, retail, travel, healthcare and government industries around the world.
One of the core considerations with data analytics is recognizing “what is your quest”. Many options and approaches are used in data analytics, several of which are of interest to the software sector. The world has changed culturally and technically, the need to be value focused and innovative is more important today than ever before. Steven shares several perspectives and analogies, where data with analytics can alter future behaviour, lowering risk and optimizing the solution. Several updates will also be shared from cloud, government and academia regarding activities and how the metrics community can collaborate. BIG DATA: LEVERAGING COMPETITIVE INTELLIGENCE IN RETAIL - Mandar Mutalikdesai...Lounge47
“Big Data: Leveraging Competitive Intelligence In Retail" focused on the next wave – enabling real time decisions and real-time responses through big data. Here are the Lounge47 key takeaways: 1. Large enterprises have this far used big data to focus on process improvement and variety of data (Process improvement 47%, Variety of data 26%, Volume of data 16%, Cost Saving & Efficiency 8%, Velocity of Data 3%) 2. Big data is not a new problem; at any point of time, our ability to produce data has always been greater than the sophistication of the tools available to process and make it usable 3. Companies like Uber and Amazon, with products like “Surge Pricing” or “Dynamic Pricing” are ushering in the paradigm of “fast data” to make instant decisions and gain a competitive advantage 4. “Fast Data” unlike “historical data, is live, interactive, automatically generated, and often self-correcting” – the volume and nature will be further accelerated through the Internet of Things (IoT) 5. In the retail vertical – data enablers that push micro decisions in real time and serve to answer – what inventory to hold? or what products to promote? - pose a powerful value proposition 6. A plethora of data products, web-based, Apps, API’s, reports could be built to help enterprises take decisions E.g. a “Color” report that tells a fashion retailer that their inventory should carry more items in blue 7. Data products could serve - ecommerce companies, sellers, brands – each stakeholder, with very specific requirements and specific problems to solve E.g. brands value reports on product discounts offered to flag policy violation 8. Solving the big data challenge would involve the following generic steps – data extraction and aggregation, cleaning, normalizing, standardizing, sorting, storing. Analytics. Visual data presentation, via dashboard interfaces, reports etc. 9. Big data sounds like a simple problem to solve however the challenges are many a) Data acquisition: crawling public websites could be limited if volume and speed of query impact service to users, thus slowing the data collection b) Data cleaning & standardization: raw data could be messy or have gaps c) Storage and retrieval d) Data Accuracy: Careful management of massive machination with minimal human audits to keep the margin of error suppressed 10. Some Big data products: Price comparison by the hour and across competition, color report on product inventory, Market & Business intelligence products, discount tracking of basket of products 11) Finding a “give-back” to encourage E-Commerce companies to part with private data would allow big data companies to build an ecosystem that is mutually beneficial to all stakeholders.
While big data is an often used buzz word, and challenges like “new technology deployment” and the “collection, analysis and measurement of data” are being solved, the full power of this paradigm will be realized when organi

Cloud computing is one of the most transformational forces in IT and promises built-in scaleability and faster innovation innovation cycles. From a developers perspective the topic Platform as a Service (PaaS) is the most exciting aspect of Cloud. Open standards based platforms allow developers worldwide to concentrate on what they are best at: developing software. All the lower-level requirements like elasticity, security and resource management are taken care of by the platform providers. Software development will become faster and more cost-efficient as a result.
So how come that PaaS is only slowly growing traction? What are the concerns and how to address them? What are good scenarios to get started? And why should one look into PaaS right now?
The innovation provided by the Cloud Foundry community aligns very well with innovation occurring inside SAP, and both are gaining significant market momentum. Learn about SAP’s involvement with Cloud Foundry, its PaaS strategy built on SAP HANA Cloud Platform, and its commitment to the open source approach overall, in this 2014 Cloud Foundry Summit presentation by Dirk Basenach and Steve Winkler.

The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) has suffered an alleged data breach after a notorious threat actor claimed to have exfiltrated data from its systems. Infamous data leaker IntelBroker posted on the even more infamous BreachForums hacking forum, saying that Europol suffered a data breach this month.
The alleged breach affected Europol agencies CCSE, EC3, Europol Platform for Experts, Law Enforcement Forum, and SIRIUS. Infiltration of these entities can disrupt ongoing investigations and compromise sensitive intelligence shared among international law enforcement agencies.

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
