Narrative
Our final choice for a song is Heaven by Beyonce. We
originally chose White Noise by Disclosure as it is a lively
song and quite energetic, but we thought that we would
be able to get a clearer narrative and better
representation by using the song Heaven. This is because
its original story line is quite heartfelt and we thought it
would be good inspiration for our music video. The
narrative in her music video is based on Beyonce having a
miscarriage and loosing her child and therefore we
wanted to go with a similar theme of loosing someone
because we believe it will be a clear story line for the
audience. In our video we want to bring in a positive
element to contrast with the negative and emotional
aspects of the video.
Storyboard
We decided to use an online storyboard maker as we thought we could reflect our
ideas clearly on here instead of drawing them as well as looking more professional.
We didn't make this an official storyboard for our music video as we thought there
would be too many shots to replicate therefore it would be more efficient choosing the
main 6 scenarios that we will re-create instead of repeating the same shots.
Shot by Shot Breakdown
Shot 1
Shot 1 is going to be set in a scenic
setting either in a field of forest as we
thought this would give the video
some range in shots. We got the idea
of this from Leona Lewis video "Run"
which we thought look effective as it
makes the artist look quite vulnerable
and isolated which run with the
theme of the song. To show these
emotions we would use a wide range
of shots and angles including close
ups, mid shots, extreme close ups as
well as long shots to include some
parts of the scenery.
Shot 2
Shot 2 is set in a traditional church
as we thought it would extremely
effective. In the original video for
Beyonce's "Heaven" she was shown
in a church surrounded by few
other people who looked upset.
Beyonce is shown crying in the
church and we thought it would be
good to reflect a bit of her video in
to ours to show that we thought
about the original video and used it
to influence our video. Some ideas
that we thought of included having
some kind of performance element
in the church either the artist
singing or another character
dancing with ribbons perhaps to
link the words of the song to the
video.
Shot 3
Shot 3 will be set in a
graveyard/memorial of some
sort. We don't want one too
dark as we don't want the
whole music video to be
really depressing. The clips in
the graveyard will not be too
prevalent throughout the
video as we just want
snippets of it throughout of
the artist grieving or
reminiscing. I think we will
use mainly pans of the scene
which include the artist.
Shot 4
Shot 4 will be the artist sitting on a
stool in a dark room or stage. We
got this idea from Whitney
Houstons "I Will Always Love You"
as we thought it would be simple
and effective to just have the dark
room and the artist on there own
singing. This ensures we have the
performance element in the music
video. I think it would look most
effective if we had the camera
panning around the artist in the
middle. This could be used with a
tracking device or a dolly.
Shot 5
Shot 5 represents all the
happy elements
throughout the video,
as we didn't want every
shot to be sad so we
thought it would be
good to have flashbacks
of when the artist was
happy. We don't want it
to be too similar to the
original song so we are
going to create a
different flashback that
we could use such as
going to a party or
being with a partner.
Shot 6
Shot 6 is supposed to
be a scenic shot similar
to the one in Alexandra
Burke's "Hallelujah"
where the artist is
standing performing
and in the background
there is lots of candles
or people holding
handles/lights. The
main reason for this
idea was to bring some
light into a dark
situation and to show
that there is hope.
Issues
• There are some issues of representation when using
this song because Beyonce is mixed race and we are
having a white artist in our video. This could mean
that the voice could look strange compared to the
artist. We are going to research into covers of the
song and see if we can find one that is more
appropriate.
• Another issue is the time to film all the footage we
need & transporting all the equipment.
• The nature of the song is a sensitive subject there
for we wanted to shine a positive perspective on the
music video.
Costumes & Props
Equipment & Crew
• HD film camera
• Tripod
• Dolly
• Hand held camera
Camera women- Katy Gopsill
Director- Ellie DeRome
Target Audience
• 14+ females.
• However we feel Beyonce has very universial
music.
• Could be a sensitive subject/can relate to it.
