Mr Brightside- The Killers.30 Minute Love Affair- Paloma Faith.
A common convention used in music videos is performance, we thought that the best way to convey our artist as a
serious, respectable singer was to have some performance in our music video.
As well as John Newman's “love me again”, we also took inspiration from theatrical music videos like “Mr Brightside” and
“30 minute love affair”. We took aspects of these videos when considering the mise-en-scene. So things like the red
curtain and clothing was influenced by these music videos.
We feel that sticking to this convention has conveyed our artist in a more positive light and keeps to an “all about the
music” manner.
Whether it is a convention or not, you see a lot of car scenes in modern music videos. Because of this we thought that
it would be relevant to our narrative to add car scenes. We feel it gives the effect of it being quite enclosed to really
focus in on the couple in our music video.
We see this happen in Beyoncé's music video for, “If I was a boy”. In that video it emphasises the tension between the
couple as there is no one else and they are confined to the small vehicle.
So, although the car scene is at a happy time in our couples relationship, the principle of it being quite confined and all
about just the two of them stays the same.
Michael Jackson, The way you make me feel.
Taylor Swift, Love Story.
Kings of Leon, Beautiful War.
As the song we chose didn’t have much of a narrative, we felt able to
do whatever we wanted with the song. We took inspiration from
videos showing narratives of couples like Taylor Swift videos.
We thought it was necessary to add a narrative for a couple of reasons;
• Our rough cut reviews said that our video was quite random. The
best way to solve that was to add a narrative running throughout
the video.
• To make the song more relatable to the listener we feel it needed
more of a meaning. By adding a narrative it gave the song more
‘depth’ and appeals to a wider audience. This is reflected in our
second audience feedback where we got mostly positive reviews
concerning our narrative.
Beyoncé- Yonce. Alesha Dixon- Breathe Slow.
“Waiting all Night” is a dance song, therefore we thought it necessary that we incorporate dancing into the video. We took
inspiration from videos like “breathe slow” which has just one dancer in a studio. This is what we did with our dancer in
order to keep the video serious, instead of having a big dance routine with a lot of dancers and colours and costumes. We
feel this links well with our artists performance and narrative.
One of Goodwin's music vide theories is the coloration between lyrics and video, although we have little to base our video
on, we still thought it was important to stick to this theory. Therefore we had clips of our character “waiting” for her
partner in response to the song title, “Waiting all Night”.
This is also the main link we have with out narrative and song. Because the song doesn’t have many lyrics we were able to
make the narrative whatever we wanted, however to keep it understandable we feel it needs this small link in order for it
to fully fit.
Todorov had the
equilibrium theory of
balance-unbalance-
balance. We noticed that it
occurs a lot in media, not
just music videos. Because
of this we decided to add
this to our narrative. One
music video we looked at
for this theory was Robbie
Williams’ “She’s the one”.
For our music video we
decided to base the
equilibrium around the
couple, therefore we
started the video with them
happy and in a relationship.
Then they had an argument
and split up, which is the
disequilibrium. Eventually
they get back together and
Todorov’s theory is
complete. We did this
because it was something
all audiences can relate to
as it happens in all media
products so they see these
on telly and in films.
Therefore the video was
more understandable and
received good reviews.
When doing research into digipaks, we realised there is very little well known digipaks around, therefore we focused our
research on just albums. Most albums now have an inside booklet which has similar properties of digipaks. We took
inspiration for our album cover from the lumineers album cover, we wanted it to have that old music feel but also still keep
it contemporary with the main image being the artist. We have kept the outside sleeves of the album black and white and
then used a lot of colour on the inside which we think Is very effective in portraying the different styles of music featured in
the album.
The main poster which inspired ours was the Florence and the Machine “lungs” poster. We thought that it was
important to keep the album cover the main focus of the poster, as that is what we are trying to advertise.
We kept the poster as a whole very simple, only showing the date, image, reviews and a couple of songs featured
on the album. We feel that this appeals more to the audience as whoever sees it when passing only has time to
glimpse at it, so keeping it simple was one convention we felt we definitely had to do.
