workers are another common way for people to carry the disease. The majority of the people do not
know their HIV or AIDS status. There are many solutions that may have worked in the past, but with a
twist to this solution of people living with AIDS and HIV. For the people who do not know their HIV
and AIDS status, at home tests would allow them to test themselves. This would give individuals the
knowledge of what their own status is if they were HIV positive or HIV negative. If the people were
more educated about their health and disease, these problems would not be so bad in Africa. Another
way to treat these people with the disease is by medications and antibiotics. In the United States, they
are using many medications to fight HIV infection. The medication they are using is called
Antiretroviral therapy, also known as ART, this medication is not a cure. Although it does control the
virus so they can live and reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to others, from the Overview of HIV

Alison Bechdel Research Paper
When your interest is as broad as theatre it s almost impossible for your identity to not be represented.
However, like many of my peers, I ve struggled to find my identity and have floated between different
adjectives for the past seven years. Luckily for me my love for Broadway guided me to a perfect show
that let me know it s okay to be confused about who I am. I saw my first Broadway show at only
seven years old and have seen over ten more since then, due to the fact I live only two hours away
from New York City by train. I always enjoyed theatre, but I didn t grow the deep love I have for it
now until acting became a career option. I spent a week of the summer completely in the business
world of theatre and came out knowing I had to be an actress. I dived into all things Broadway, bought
as many albums as I could, watched as many interviews as possible, saved up to see more shows, but

Alison s fear of herself. Not only is she afraid of her sexuality, she s confused. I m not attracted to
men, but that doesn t mean I m attracted to girls either, she tells her soon to be girlfriend. My
philosophy towards sexuality has always been I don t know if I m gay: I ve never dated a girl. When I
told my father this, I was shut down and told that if I was gay I d have known it forever. To have
someone my feelings validated has put my mind at ease. It s very likely that I am a lesbian, but for the

Gold Rush Negative Effects
Thousands of people migrating west, new opportunities coming their way, heading towards the gold
found in San Francisco. After gold found in the state of California, thousands of people came over
there to mine the gold and get rich, making the Gold Rush largest migration in world history. So many
people came to California that the state became the most diverse state in the United States. Although
there were positive attributes to the Gold Rush, the Gold Rush mostly had a negative effect on
America because of the harsh journey and the ruined landscape.
To begin, the rough journey to migrate west certainly negatively affected the United States of
America. While the american citizens were traveling to the west for gold, an extreme cholera outbreak
developed due to the unsanitary conditions that the migrants had to deal with (Gillon 65). These
people were not at their home where they have supplies and cleaning equipment; they were living in
tents where they had no access to anything like a broom to sweep the floor. If someone got dirty or
sick, they couldn t do anything about other than wash up in the river, which would worsen the cholera
outbreak. A Native American described the scene as a solid mass of wagons and men digging graves
on each side of the river; men dying in their wagons, hallooing and crying and cramping from cholera,
women screaming and hallooing and praying (Gillon 65). Because of the filthy conditions, many
people were screaming and dying from cholera. These people are putting up with so much pain just to
get some gold, which they may not live to see. Hence, because of the long, harsh journey with foul
conditions, the Gold Rush undoubtedly negatively impacted the ... Show more content on

Statement of Purpose for Becoming a Pediatric Resident
I believe that empathy and interpersonal regard are the foundation stones of human connectedness.
Growing up in the fast growing city of New Delhi in India, I have witnessed several children grow in
front of my eyes. This offered me an opportunity to see how this time of life has an effect on the
whole personality of that person. I always remember my grandma used to tell me how we can only
shape a clay pot when it is soft. Once is it hardened in a kiln, you cannot change the basic structure.
Children are like that soft clay. What they do in childhood defines what they ll be as an adult. This is
After enrolling in medical school, I had firsthand experience in dealing with the pediatric problems

cases. I am currently pursuing an observership at the Children Hospital of Orange County, Orange.

Effects Of Advertising Cause Low Self-Esteem
Advertising is an over 100 billion dollar a year industry and affects all of us throughout our lives. We
are each exposed to over 2,000 ads a day, constituting perhaps the most powerful educational force in
society. The average American will spend one and one half years of his or her life watching television
commercials. The ads sell a great deal more than products. They sell images, makeup, skin and hair
care, diet pills, and cosmetic surgery as a means of normalcy.
In this paper, I will argue how the effects of advertisements on a person s identity can cause low self
esteem and lead to health issues. First, I will explain what a person s identity means. A person s
identity is who you are, the way you think about yourself, the way you are viewed by the world and
the characteristics that define you.
Media portrayals of women through advertising and characters who are then, airbrushed and perfect,
contribute to norms that reinforce this unattainable image of beauty. According to Maggie Vlazny, a
mental health professional, Self esteem is a core identity issue, essential to personal validation and our
ability to experience joy. Once achieved, it comes from the inside out. But it is assaulted or stunted
from the outside in. A woman with low self esteem does not feel good about herself because she has
absorbed negative messages about women from the culture and/or relationships.
Based on the images seen in advertising, women often feel they should be thin and

The Yolk Sac And Its Effects On The Human Bodies
375 million years ago, a fish like creature crawled onto the land. This transition into an existence on
dry terrain gave rise to amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and finally to humans. As early reptiles
colonized in adverse new environments, they adapted features to help them survive during their
struggles for food and territory. Our reptilian ancestors were changing their bodies and these new
features are evident in our human bodies today. One of these features that link us to our reptilian
ancestors is the yolk sac which is evident in the human embryo as well as the eggs of reptiles. As
reptiles adapted to life on a dry earth, they needed to keep their eggs from drying out an so evolved a
new type of egg which enclosed the embryos in an amnion filled sac and covered it with a hard shell.
Reptiles and humans both carry the yolk gene but it is no longer functional in humans as we evolved
and no longer needed yolk to feed our embryos. But those broken yolk genes are still in our genome
and link us to these ancient egg laying animals. Skin is another important feature that connects us to
reptiles. In order to withstand the dry air on land, reptiles developed layers of dead skin to insulate
them and create a water tight barrier. Humans have inherited these same layers of dead skin to prevent
our bodies from drying out. Our skin not only protects our bodies but it is responsible for other
features which we share with our reptilian ancestors; important structures that originate

Multicultural Literacy
Discussion When students finish middle school and move to high school, is when they are mostly
likely to drop out of school. Students don t see the point of continuing their education when most of
the time they don t understand or don t relate to the information that is being presented to them. Most
of the time students rather be out in the streets with their peers causing havoc, than being inside a
classroom. Typically, this often occurs in urban areas where the school population usually consists of
students with culturally diverse backgrounds. According to the textbook Content Area Reading and
Writing (2008), students in inner city schools finish assignments that involve reading or writing. The
reason being that they often lack connection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Students won t be able to be successful because, nowadays the majority average paying jobs require
for their employees to be able to read, write and communicate effectively as well as to have a high

Cognitive Biases
In our daily life we often face with various cognitive biases. Today, there are about 166 types of
cognitive biases. Even though we are rarely able to recognize them, cognitive biases have a great
effect on our way of living. Personally, by analyzing my daily behaviour, as well as people around me,
I can identify four cognitive biases, that occur more often than other. One of them is Law of the
instrument,or in other words an over reliance on a familiar tool or methods, ignoring or under valuing
alternative approaches. This cognitive bias I experience very often, since one of the weak sides of my
character is stubbornness and risk aversion, so in my daily behaviour while making any decision, I
tend to rely on a familiar tool rather than

The Wanderings Of Odysseus And The Odyssey And The Odyssey
In Edith Hamilton s book, Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes and in The Wanderings of
Odysseus from The Odyssey the epic poem by Homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald, Jason and
Odysseus display the following similar traits throughout their adventures: selfishness, dishonesty, and
delegate. Throughout Jason and Odysseus adventures, they both showed a great amount of selfishness.
Selfishness is the act of being selfish, lacking consideration for others. On Jason s quest to finding the
Golden Fleece, the author mentions, ...he thought of ambition only, never of love or of gratitude
(Hamilton 133). During the long quest for the Golden Fleece, Jason was only focused on being
successful, not much different from Odysseus. While on Odysseus voyage there had been fierce
cannibals who bombarded the fleet of ships with boulders. Selfishness played apart of this
misdemeanor because Odysseus didn t seem to care to help out the rest of his crew, Only Odysseus,
his ship, and its crew of 45 survive the shower of boulders. The lone ship then sails to Aeaea, home of
the goddess Circe, who is considered by many to be a witch (Fitzgerald 1224). Both scenarios from
Hamilton s book and Fitzgerald s book are very similar. The main characters both seem like they only
care about themselves being successful and they don t fully put thought into their mentor s health.
Mentors are the people who have intentions to helping out. The mentor in The Mythology would be
Medea and in The Odyssey, it would have been his crew, who did not survive on the other ships. They
may have not been aware that they were being selfish because they were busy having their mind set on
having to stay alive and complete the duty. In effect of having their minds only set on getting the job
done, all three of these characteristics have played a part of it.
A great amount of dishonesty had played a part on the way of Jason and Odysseus adventures. In
Edith Hamilton s book, Jason showed dishonesty by taking all the glory when many people helped
along the way, All that she did evil and of good was done for him alone, and in the end, all the reward
she got was that he turned traitor to her (Hamilton 133). Jason wasn t very honest to Medea,

The company that I will be discussing about is Harrah s Entertainment, Inc. This company was
founded by Bill Harrah on October 29, 1937 and has its headquarters in Nevada, USA. They own
more than 50 casinos and hotels and have approximately 33,000 employees presently working. The
company has an annual revenue of $8.6 billion and is currently one of the top casino gaming
companies of the world. The reason for their success is good customer service and efficient usage of
software development. Customer service is given a top priority and many incentives are provided to
them. This makes the customers feel really happy about the services and facilities provided to them.
So the possibility of the customers returning back is very high. This is a major reason for the success
of the company.
Summary
Harrah s had initially used enterprise data warehouse from Teradata. They have now expanded their
database system since their customer base has increased. They make use of Teradata Priority
Scheduler and Teradata Dynamic Query Manager. In order to protect their system from external
attackers and to ensure total safety, Harrah s makes use of Teradata Dual Active Solutions. This
system is useful to identify customers that come for the first time and it provides services and offers

Analysis of the Unforgiven
Analysis of Unforgiven Brenda J. Thompson ENG 225: Introduction to Film Nathaniel Millard
October 5, 2009 Summary While the movie Unforgiven (1992) directed and starring Clint Eastwood,
as William Munny, is in the genre of a western in the late 1800 s. It has a basic theme that we are still
making movies about today, justice and what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in our search for
it. It is a story of a journey that one man has to make in order for him to care for his children but it
ends up being so much more of a journey than he anticipates. This movie is the ultimate of good

The buildings were dark, small and gloomy on the inside and due to the fact that the majority of the
movie took place in the nighttime hours and it was stormy more than not, the outside was just as
gloomy as the inside. The lighting was minimal as it would have been back then bringing mood with
it. The foreshadowing of the stormy weather worked in making this movie what it was, the rain
seemed to let you know when something was coming. As much as the wilderness scenery was
beautiful, I found it downplayed by the drab colors of the costumes and the non use of color
throughout the entire film. It seemed as though the only time color was used was determined by what
that particular scene was about. For instance, as English Bob came into town the only item of color
was the drab red of the stagecoach, so we knew whoever was in that stagecoach was going to become
an important character to a scene coming up, everything else was a muted earth tone of tan, brown,
green and blue. As stated in our text a director may simply let their settings just be a backdrop and let
the action of that scene take over. (Boggs Petrie, 2008, pg. 374) This was exactly how this movie was
told; it focused on the story instead of glamorizing it with colorful costumes and scenery. We needed
to see the drabness of the subject in the muted colors of the movie. Another scene that showed a pop
of color was that of William (Eastwood) and Ned (Freeman) were having a conversation where
William was

Rousseau s The Social Contract
The following texts, Rousseau s The Social Contract, Marx s Private Property and Communism,
Estranged Labor and Money, all differentiate between a general will, and a more personal, individual
will. However, Rousseau s and Marx s theories of a general will, or collective being have
discrepancies in both the origin and implications of general will and individual will. Rousseau defines
general will as a collective desire to advance society towards a common goal. However, Rousseau
warns that ignoring the general will and pursuing one s own selfish personal will is dangerous not only
for an individual, but can also ultimately lead to the destruction of the body politic. Marx also
discusses a concept similar to Rousseau s general will, however ... Show more content on

Additionally, Rousseau believes that self interests are often detrimental to the common good, stating
that each individual, as a man, may have a particular will contrary or dissimilar to the general will
which he has as a citizen. His particular interest may speak to him quite differently from the common
interest: his absolute and naturally independent existence may make him look upon what he owes to
the common cause as a gratuitous contribution... The continuance of such an injustice could not but
prove the undoing of the body politic. (Rousseau, 194 195). It is evident that Rousseau is aware of
humankind s selfish desires stemming from a personal will, and he believes that if individuals begin to
ignore the common will and instead act upon their personal desires and will, that it will often lead to
pandemonium. This chaos is likely to destroy any Republic, as conflicting and selfish ideals will cause
individuals to lose sight of the general will, leading to the collapse of a coexisting society. Rousseau,
however, does not address how individual will originates, a point that Marx discusses in length in his
Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts.
The epitome of the detrimental effects caused by one acting purely on personal will can be seen in the
film, American Beauty. In this film, Lester Burnham can be seen acting upon his personal will and
ignoring the collective good in his

Euthanasia Informative Essay
The Controversy of Euthanasia One of the biggest and most controversial topics throughout society
today is the act of euthanasia in humans. In the medical field, euthanasia is commonly known as
assisted suicide that is essentially for terminally ill patients only. When thinking about euthanasia,
Americans tend to relate it towards the rights for animals, but in this specific example I will focus on
the controversial topic of legalization on behalf of people who are professionally diagnosed with a life
threatening diseases. This will not include minorities under the age of eighteen or the elderly over the
age of sixty. Thus when looking at the data in today s society, euthanasia is clearly defined as taking

All of the patients who requested assisted suicide cited psychological and social concerns as their
primary reasons. According to the Health Division, this clearly does not give the United States court
system any proof of dramatic circumstances in the use of active euthanasia. Ben Mattlin, who is a
known to be a famous author in the medical and legal standpoints of society, wrote Suicide by? Not So
Fast, in November 1, 2010. Mattlin expresses, My job as a physician is to ensure that people can see
their inherent dignity reflected in they way they are cared for (Mattlin). He debates the issues on how
active euthanization it is not ratified enough to become nationally acceptable due to the evidence of no
complications found within the state of Oregon. Mattlin powerfully expresses that actively having the
option to end ones life is unjust and should not be made legal. Given the concluding data made in the
state of Oregon, He believes that a person should not be able to make a decision for them or for
another on the act of terminating a life. Therefore, he persuasively projects the reasoning of why a
human life, disabled or frail, should not have to choose death to become dignified. Voluntary
euthanasia may be looked down upon within active medical practices, although in some cases, the
view of passive euthanasia is morally acceptable. For instance, within common life threating illnesses,
a patient will take extreme measures into

in the market include the growing number of people within the 15 29 age range. Also, phones are

Eastwood s Sudden Impact Film Analysis
In the first scene of Eastwood s Sudden Impact, the audience is presented with a scene in which a car
is surrounded by thick, dark fog, making the background difficult to make out. If not for the diegetic
sound of the crashing waves a few hundred feet below the edge of the near by precipice, the audience
would have a lack of sense of location. Already, the scene has an ominous feel to it thanks to the
darkness of the scene and the remoteness of the location where nobody is there to witness what is
about to happen, and just like that, the audience knows Eastwood has put somebody to no good. The
scene switches to the likewise dark interior of the car, in which a man and Jen are making out. The
close up shot of the two changes to an extreme ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is a similar use of the lack of lighting in Unforgiven. Upon receiving the news that Ned,
William Munny s best friend, was beaten to death by Little Bill, the sheriff in Big Whiskey, for the
murder that Munny and the kid committed, Munny decides to take justice into his own hands. As it
rains cats and dogs in the dark night, Munny, having sent off the kid with the money, walks into town
straight into the whorehouse, where Little Bill is discussing a plan of catching the murderers (Munny
and the kid). The whorehouse is also very dimly lit, allowing Munny to go unnoticed until he finally
he cocks his gun and prepares to kill every deputy, the owner of the whorehouse, and ultimately Little
Bill. Before Munny kills Little Bill, Little Bill tells him that he doesn t deserve to die like this, to
which Munny replies, Deserve s got nothing to do with it. As Munny stands over Little Bill, he s
filmed at a low angle, showing how dominating and powerful he is as he towers over the high angle
shot of the powerless Little Bill. Seeing that he s not going to come out of this encounter alive, Little
Bill s last words are See you in hell. This encounter is an interesting one because it shows that justice
isn t as straightforward as it may seem. Little Bill thought he was doing the just and correct thing by
restricting the possession of firearms in his town to maintain order, making the two men who cut up
the whore pay compensation, and killing Ned

Thelma, hesitantly, decides on giving therapy one last try as she cannot seem to move passed on being

tells her that it is not going to be easy and that its will take dedication in therapy to get her to realize
that her obsession is based on the power she has given to Matthew. Determined to get her to agree to
not harming herself, Thelma finally agrees after hesitation informs him that she will only commit
herself to six months of treatment and no more than that. (Yalom, 2000) I thought Yalom stated the
goals and what is expected of his patient as what I have read in the Corey text that boundaries and
goals have to be stated otherwise the therapist is treating a patient with loose objectives and indefinite
expectations. During the next session Thelma explains that Matthew s first meetings outside therapy
began a year after in Union Square, San Francisco near a cafe. Thelma and Matthew end up spending
the day having coffee and conversing as if they had been old friends reunited, including having sex on
one occasion. She describes Matthew being caring and attractive. Thelma informs Yalom that she had

be happy with a phone call to let her know he still thinks about her as he made her feel alive. (Yalom,

External And Business Issues In The Viacom Company
The Viacom Company through the process of its stability has endured many issues both from the
external and internal environment. The issues may largely affect the company s performance in both
markets and also achieve a loyal customer/viewer base as well as the ability to hire and retain
employees in the television business that is very competitive. The competition could be threatening to
Viacom since, through constant innovation and creativity from the competitors, even the loyal viewers
of its networks could easily be swayed towards other new directions. Therefore, Viacom would largely
benefit if the issues are closely addressed with optimal carefulness and efficient strategies. The
strategies will keep the company on its toes. There are issues that are currently affecting the company,
and others are pending, meaning, they could affect the media conglomerate both positively or
negatively in the future. The Viacom Company faces the following issues; continuous profit and sales
decline amidst executive changes, troubles with charter carriage talks and the end to internal executive
disputes by the appointment of new executives.
The media conglomerate in the current years is facing troubles in stabilizing its sales and profits. After
the release of company earnings, the shares had sunk to 40%. Much of this could be contributed to
executive upheaval, with the ousting of the company CEO Philippe Dauman. The Viacom includes

Summary Of The Novel The Wednesday Wars
Have you ever read a book and seen yourself in the main character? This happened to me in the novel
The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt. This novel is about a teenager who goes to his first day of
seventh grade. In his school, on Wednesdays, the Catholic children go to CCD, or Confraternity of
Christian Doctrine, which is a religious education, while the Jewish children go to Hebrew to prepare
for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah. However, the protagonist, Holling Hoodhood is Presbyterian, so does not
go to either of those classes, whereas he stays with Mrs. Baker, a teacher Holling believes to hate him
from the first day of school. Throughout the novel, Gary D. Schmidt, through Holling s thoughts and
actions, is able to distinguish Holling s characteristics.

Disadvantages Of Humanities
I appreciate Mr. Coles essay, but as someone who s went to college once and basically starting over
due to the lack of finding a career or job in my field per say. Personally I think going deeper into the
humanities should be optional. Based on my brief tenure in the professional workforce, I didn t need
to know about The Ancient Mayan Civilization or have a need for calculus to be successful in my job.
At the same time with everything going on in the world today, I think the humanities may benefit
some of the people who are freaking out behind the history of this country they live in. If anything I d
wish there would ve been advanced home economics classes. I come from a single parent home, as
well as the first in my family to graduate college. My mother didn t know much about a budget, 401k,
Roth IRA or preparing for the future in general. When I graduated college and moved out on my own,
there was so many shocks I encountered living in the real world. I learned from my mistakes and
ignorance and now know what to teach my future children what not to do. In college my mom told me
to get a credit card to pay for my books, I had no idea I had to pay that money back monthly. I let that
debt sit almost three years, when I went to purchase a nicer car that wasn t cash, I learned about credit

Indian Church Community
Imagine a church that has no exact start time and no end time, where you can only assume that church
ends after eating lunch at four o clock when half of the members starts to leave. It is not just any

community or communities that at least have some common ground. One of the communities that I am
part of is that particular church community as a mentioned earlier. There is a quite a difference in the
people in an American church and an Indian church community. Sometimes the service takes longer

Fallen Societies from Failure of Rulers
John F. Kennedy once wrote, Efforts and courage are not enough without direction. From this I think
he s saying societies can fall if their not ruled the right way. And some of the societies seemed like
nothing could get in their way, but obviously they did because they didn t take good care of them. That
goes for a lot of other places also. Great societies fall due to social inequalities, a dysfunctional or
corrupt government, a crippled and inflating economy, and over expansion. That s why Nazi Germany,
The Civil Rights Era in America, and Ancient Rome didn t survive. A number of societies fall because
of rebellion and the people not being happy. All of the kids in my dystopian novel were upset with the
Unwinding process. They couldn t take the fear that they had to go through from the ages 13 18.
While reading you could feel the fear they went through such as, and in seconds, disobedience erupts
into a full scale revolt. Every terrible is now a terror. The guards fire, but there are simply too many
kids, and not enough tranq bullets. For every kid that goes down, there s another kid that doesn t. The
guards are quickly overwhelmed, and once they are, the mob starts storming the front gate (311). A lot
of people were forced out of their public life so that was really a con and started a rebellion. The
citizens of that society thought that this was completely unfair and they wouldn t stand for it. An
example of this was, Although many of these citizens proved to be

While Las Vegas glitters, Reno has its own aura. Reno got the jump on Vegas when wide open gaming

Pink Cadillac, starring Clint Eastwood and Bernadette Peters, is one of the best cult classics from the
1980s. Although the plot has been widely panned, the on screen romance between Eastwood and
Peters as well as the stunt work done by Eastwood himself, has attracted a core following. Of course,
the expected auto chase sequence on scenic Highway 89 was the icing on the cake, drawing attention
to Tahoe and Reno, much in the same way Bullitt and The Dead Pool showcased the harrowing streets

Critical Analysis Of I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
Kevin Young s I am Trying to Break Your Heart examines the dark and chaotic nature of trying to heal
from emotional damage. Addressing a lover, the speaker uses twisted and macabre diction to describe
the dark feelings that brew within him. These sinister desires to harm the lover shine through in the
terse language and erratic structure, as well as. The 2008 poem alludes to a Wilco song of the same
name, wherein the speaker describes his heartache after leaving his lover and facing regret concerning
the situation. This is alluded to in stanzas 12 and 13 when Young writes ... I assassin / down the
avenue, (22 23) the second line of the song. Without taking note of this allusion, the poem would seem
as if Young is portraying himself as a manipulator seeking to gain power over his lover. But through
referencing the 2002 song I am Trying to Break Your Heart by Jeff Tweedy, Young clarifies his intent.
The poem is meant to illustrate the chaotic and destructive nature of healing from emotional damage,
showing how a love lost can leave an individual scarred and vengeful. Young begins the poem by
indirectly addressing his lover, saying I am hoping / to hang your head. This creates a dark tone from
the offset, implying that the speaker wants to harm the intended recipient of the poem. He then goes
on in the second stanza to say he would hang the lover s head on his wall in shame. This evokes an
image of taxidermy, which is meant to objectify and dehumanize the

How Does Mere Exposure Influence Affective Responses
Eddie Harmon Jones and John J. B. Allen (2001) designed a study that focused on the mere exposure
effect, which states that more exposure to a stimulus results in a positive affect toward that stimulus.
Numerous studies have been conducted based on cognitive responses, but this study focused on the
affective responses. The main purpose of the study was to accept or reject (test) the hypothesis that
mere exposure influences affective responses using other measures than a cognitive response, such as
self report. They would test this by measuring facial electromyographic or EMG responses to the
stimuli, thus measuring emotional responses. They also had three other hypothesis that dealt with the
main hypothesis but were more specific. They alos hypothesized that familiar stimuli would stimulate
a larger zygomatic (cheek) muscle region activity and/or smaller corrugator (brow) muscle region
activity compared to novel stimuli and that motivational responses would be affected by familiarity
when evaluating frontal cortical activity. The second purpose of the study was to determine if
individual differeces in affective traits influence the reactions of mere exposure to stimuli. If ... Show

Anti Dumping Law And The Context Of Wto Essay
Anti Dumping Law in the Context of WTO WTO was established with the objective of promoting free
trade. Barriers to free trade may be tariff barrier or non tariff barrier. Tariff regimes are easy to
administer and simple to understand but non tariff measures involve intricate issues and are governed
by various WTO agreements. In this context, Anti dumping is one of the most frequently used non
tariff measure. WTO rules allow the member countries to opt for Anti dumping measures with specific
stipulation. On this note, if a country today has Anti dumping legislations, it must be consistent with
the WTO s agreement. The country s trade practices and procedures in actual investigation of Anti
doping must conform to the agreement. Anti dumping has unique combination of political and
economic manipulability. During the last fourteen years of WTO, the use of Anti dumping has become
rampant that it is criticised as threatening to limit the market access achieved under WTO trade
negotiations over the last fifty years or so. Even though the use of WTO s Anti doping has been
associated with fear that its measures are used for protectionist purpose, many countries support it
because it can be used to counter against unfair trade practices. Anti Dumping Duties in the Context of

Breast Auggmentation
Women who want larger breasts may consider a breast augmentation (implant surgery), whereas,
women who would like their breasts lifted may choose to have a mastopexy (breast lift). However,
women in Orange County, California, who would like to improve the shape, position and size of their
breasts should consider having a breast lift with an augmentation with Dr. Farbod Esmailian. Dr.
Esmailian is a double board certified plastic surgeon in Orange County who specializes in performing
plastic surgery procedures to improve sagging, deflated looking breasts.

Esmailian in Orange County
Dr. Esmailian and his medical staff are dedicated to providing each patient with the high quality care
and attention that they deserve. Therefore, during the initial consultation Dr. Esmailian will want to
know about the patient s medical history, including medications, lifestyle choices (smoking, drinking
alcohol, recreational drug use, etc.), current medical conditions (heart disease, diabetes, etc.) as well as
what she would like to accomplish with plastic surgery.
During this consultation, the patient should expect Dr. Esmailian to perform a physical evaluation of
her breasts. If he believes that the patient will benefit from a breast augmentation, breast lift or a
combination procedure, Dr. Esmailian may also choose to take pictures and measurements of the
patient s breasts. These photos may be used for reference as well as for comparison purposes once her
surgery is complete.
The majority of patients will need to have pre surgical testing performed. This testing frequently
includes blood tests. In addition, some patients may be required to visit their family physician to
receive a surgical release prior to scheduling their surgery with Dr. Esmailian at his surgery center in

Comparing Women And Men s Basketball
It is officially basketball season! Do you know what this means? This means crazy fans going topless,
painting their torso one color, incise a letter to spell out their team s name, and excessive screaming. It
is such an interesting atmosphere to be in. However, there is a difference between men and women
basketball. What is the difference? Women and men s basketball are different in so many ways. Even
though their size, athleticism, speed, and strength are comparable they are less competitive, are not
able to reach the same level of stability while men add an interest to the game.
From my observation I decided to go to University of South Carolina Aiken. There I observed the men
s and women s teams straight for two hours each, for five days ... Show more content on

To be clear, these players have no idea who each other are. The questions that were asked are very
simple, nothing out of the ordinary. The two women I interviewed was Sade J, a sophomore basketball
player at the University of South Carolina Aiken (Division 2) and Kira G, a senior basketball player at
the University of North Carolina (Division 1). The first question I asked both players was, what
motivates you or what drives you? Surprisingly both of their answers were different from the first
question to last. Sade s answer was My teammates , while Kira s answer was To keep my scholarship .
The second question I asked these ladies were, what made you want to compete in collegiate level?
Sade s answer was Playing at this level helps pay for school , while Kira stated It was always a dream
since I was a kid . The third question asked was, would you consider yourself to be a leader on the
court? Sade replied Yes if I was on the court more often , while Kira stated Sometimes . The fourth
question asked was, what steps do you take to improve your experience? Sade responded Practice ,
while Kira stated Constantly in the gym working on things I need to improve on . The fifth question
asked was, how would you earn your teams trust? Sade answered By being a virtuous player on and
off the court , while Kira replied Keeping my

Egoism, Psychological And Ethical, And Altruism
From the moment you are born, you are being influenced. Influenced on what to wear, how to do your
hair, how to speak, whom to associate with, etc. All of these criteria make up who you are. These
influences determine how you think and what you believe. With all these influences in our daily lives
we inevitably do actions throughout the day, and our actions have consequences. Some consequences
are good and some are bad, but based on our actions are there ulterior motives involved? Do we do
things to solely benefit ourselves or do we sometimes do things to help out others and the greater good
of mankind? These questions bring to the surface the topics of egoism, psychological and ethical, and
altruism. Egoism in general means that people think of their own advantage. They have high opinions
of themselves and dote on themselves. Meaning they live and breathe off of self praise. Most of the
time this word has a negative connotation to it, and it is looked down upon (Flynn 459). Egoism falls
into two categories: psychological and ethical. The term psychological egoism refers to the mindset
that there is no such thing as a self less act. For example, if someone does a good deed, they have a
hidden motive behind their deed. Whether they want attention, praise, or accolades from performing
the deed, they did not do it just to help someone out (Rosenstand 164). As human beings our nature is
to be selfish, and there is no way around it. We are innately selfish, always have and

Interview Profile BEH 225 Introduction to Behavioral Science My interview profile was an evaluation
of a 20 year old male where I compared and contrasted my own personality profile. During this
interview, I noticed that we all have different attitudes and personalities that depend on how we are
raised, environmental factors, experiences, and cultural beliefs. I begin my interview by asking my
interviewee basic information. His is a twenty year old guy who is interested in playing football,
listening to the music, and surfing the internet. He is currently unemployed and waiting for his
deployment as member of the army. He attended some colleges and someday would like to become a
computer analyst. Some of his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, my personality is the exactly opposite of what he has. I am a trustee, and decisive
in practical affairs. The guardian of time honored institutions and very dependable. I scored
introverted, sensing, judging, and thinking. What do people usually perspective about motivation? Do
we do things because we like doing it? This is what is known as intrinsically motivated. Or we do
things in purpose? Getting a reward, or token from someone? This type of motivation is extrinsically
motivated. I think most of us prefer to be intrinsically motivated. We like to have fun on what we do
instead of being forced to do something that we don t want to. I and my interviewee are the same, we
rather do something that we like to do instead doing something that we don t want and have something
in return. One of my evaluations in my interview profile is self monitoring. It is the tendency of an
individual to observe the situation for cues about how to react. I ask my interviewee if he monitors his
attitude toward a situation. He responded, I monitor my attitude when it comes to other people that I
am not comfortable with or to people that I am not emotionally close. With this, I can say that my
interviewee observes his attitude being relevant towards his behaviors to the people

If Democracy Had A Birth Date
If democracy had a birth date, it would be June 15, 1215. On that fateful day, on the meadow called
Runnymede along the River Thames, English barons confronted a tyrannical King John to demand
that their list of grievances be addressed. In the 63 clauses of the esteemed Magna Carta, the barons
were largely concerned with protecting themselves from unjust taxes and defending their rights and
privileges. However, the Magna Carta accomplished so much more. It established for the first time the
principle that the king is not above the law. Also within the historical document are the core principles
the rule of law and the law of the land that have resonated with nations in search of freedom and
justice. In fact, nearly six centuries after King ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the first colonists arrived in Jamestown, West Virginia in 1607, they carried with them their hopes,
dreams, fears, and most importantly, the individual liberties and established rights that were their
birthright as Englishmen. By the 1600s, these colonists subjects of England had enjoyed political
freedoms, such as trial by jury, largely unheard of elsewhere in the world. The Magna Carta, signed
centuries before on the plains of Runnymede in 1215, had established the principle of limited
government. That meant that the power of the king was not absolute. According to the principles of
mercantilism, the colonies main function was to bolster the mother country, both economically and
politically. The American colonies were set up as a source of raw materials for England. They were
expected to export valuable commodities, such as cotton, lumber, tar, gold, and silver, among other
things. They were regarded as English subjects and possessions of the mother country. Over time, the
colonists, forced to straddle two worlds, both England and America, rebelled. Their primary source of
anger and frustration was that they were being severely taxed without having a voice in Parliament.
After the Sugar Act passed in 1765, Samuel Adams, who saw it as a violation of their birth rights and
liberties, won the support of the Massachusetts Assembly and declared: If taxes are laid upon us in any

Shattering the Glass House of Mirth Essay
Shattering the Glass House
where ignorance is bliss, / Tis folly to be wise. Thomas Gray
The title of Edith Wharton s novel The House of Mirth waxes poetic irony in the case of the old
money society of turn of the century New York. The individual as part of the collective of society
which seeks to oppress individuality is representative of the house in the novel s title. To remain
ignorant and play by the rules, therein lies the mirth. Clearly, the victimization of the story s heroine,
Lily Bart, by the elite social set she associates herself with illustrates Wharton s disdain for the rigidity
of this society against the individual. Lily is, at first, an example of the collective society she is a
product of; however, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wharton s representation of the power of the social class of turn of the century New York is expressed
through the struggle between the individual and the collective force of society. The rules of society
define each individual s place, and it is the group that reflects shared beliefs and dictates behavior.
This dichotomy is multi layered, reaching all the way down to the deep internal struggle of the
individual human being. Lily s struggle with her individuality and the need to play by the rules causes
her to commit social blunders and become an innocent victim of society s harsh cruelty.
At the beginning of the novel, Lily is aware of and acts according to the rules which subscribe to the
Manichean principle: One must consistently act in one way or the other there is no in between. There
is no distance between the internal and the external for Lily at this point, which is the root of her
innocence, but she is vaguely aware that something is happening to her. She longs for escape from
routine (19) but is still conscious of the fact that escape does not come without a price. Lily is never
able to do a natural thing without having to screen it behind a structure of artifice (19). She is innocent
in intent, and because of this she indulges herself with her little escapes from time to time without
much thought to the consequences until after the fact. Her attempts to ignore or mask her social
indiscretions

My Identity In The Gaza Strip
I am an American Jew born 12 years after the end of WWII. Hebrew school, which I started attending
at age 5 until 11, created a sense of difference and specialty between myself and other non Jews.
Arabs, Palestinians and all anti Semites were the enemy of the Jewish world community and were to
be despised. Consequently, 75 percent of my identity was held in place by my membership to the
Jewish world community. Consequently, I lived the next twenty years as a Defensive American
Zionist Jew. I didn t question Israel for its military actions, for occupying other s lands, bulldozing
houses or refugee camps down, or committing other horrible acts. After all, Israel was only defending
itself from terrorist factions that called for the genocide of the Jewish people and whose intent was and
still is to wipe Israel off the map. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consequently, after hours of searches and reading articles published from each side on the middle east
conflict and its issues two things became undeniable clear to me, one, the Gaza Strip is an occupied
territory and two, there really are terrorists in the Gaza Strip who want to exterminate the Jewish
population. Nonetheless, Israel, perhaps rightly so given its long history of being attacked and the
continued philippic speeches by

For the people who do not know their HIV and AIDS status, at home tests would allow them to test themselves. This would give individuals the knowledge of what their own status is if they were HIV positive or HIV negative. If the people were more educated about their health and disease, these problems would not be so bad in Africa. Another way to treat these people with the disease is by medications and antibiotics. In the United States, they are using many medications to fight HIV infection. The medication they are using is called Antiretroviral therapy, also known as ART, this medication is not a cure. However, like many of my peers, I ve struggled to find my identity and have floated between different adjectives for the past seven years. Luckily for me my love for Broadway guided me to a perfect show that let me know it s okay to be confused about who I am. I saw my first Broadway show at only seven years old and have seen over ten more since then, due to the fact I live only two hours away from New York City by train. I always enjoyed theatre, but I didn t grow the deep love I have for it now until acting became a career option. I spent a week of the summer completely in the business world of theatre and came out knowing I had to be an actress. • 5. Gold Rush Negative Effects Thousands of people migrating west, new opportunities coming their way, heading towards the gold found in San Francisco. After gold found in the state of California, thousands of people came over there to mine the gold and get rich, making the Gold Rush largest migration in world history. So many people came to California that the state became the most diverse state in the United States. Although there were positive attributes to the Gold Rush, the Gold Rush mostly had a negative effect on America because of the harsh journey and the ruined landscape. To begin, the rough journey to migrate west certainly negatively affected the United States of America. While the american citizens were traveling to the west for gold, an extreme cholera outbreak developed due to the unsanitary conditions that the migrants had to deal with (Gillon 65). These people were not at their home where they have supplies and cleaning equipment; they were living in tents where they had no access to anything like a broom to sweep the floor. If someone got dirty or sick, they couldn t do anything about other than wash up in the river, which would worsen the cholera outbreak. A Native American described the scene as a solid mass of wagons and men digging graves on each side of the river; men dying in their wagons, hallooing and crying and cramping from cholera, women screaming and hallooing and praying (Gillon 65). Because of the filthy conditions, many people were screaming and dying from cholera. These people are putting up with so much pain just to get some gold, which they may not live to see. Growing up in the fast growing city of New Delhi in India, I have witnessed several children grow in front of my eyes. This offered me an opportunity to see how this time of life has an effect on the whole personality of that person. I always remember my grandma used to tell me how we can only shape a clay pot when it is soft. Once is it hardened in a kiln, you cannot change the basic structure. Children are like that soft clay. What they do in childhood defines what they ll be as an adult. This is After enrolling in medical school, I had firsthand experience in dealing with the pediatric problems and interacting with their parents. • 7. Effects Of Advertising Cause Low Self-Esteem Advertising is an over 100 billion dollar a year industry and affects all of us throughout our lives. We are each exposed to over 2,000 ads a day, constituting perhaps the most powerful educational force in society. The average American will spend one and one half years of his or her life watching television commercials. The ads sell a great deal more than products. They sell images, makeup, skin and hair care, diet pills, and cosmetic surgery as a means of normalcy. In this paper, I will argue how the effects of advertisements on a person s identity can cause low self esteem and lead to health issues. First, I will explain what a person s identity means. A person s identity is who you are, the way you think about yourself, the way you are viewed by the world and the characteristics that define you. Media portrayals of women through advertising and characters who are then, airbrushed and perfect, contribute to norms that reinforce this unattainable image of beauty. According to Maggie Vlazny, a mental health professional, Self esteem is a core identity issue, essential to personal validation and our ability to experience joy. Once achieved, it comes from the inside out. But it is assaulted or stunted from the outside in. • 9. The Yolk Sac And Its Effects On The Human Bodies 375 million years ago, a fish like creature crawled onto the land. This transition into an existence on dry terrain gave rise to amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and finally to humans. As early reptiles colonized in adverse new environments, they adapted features to help them survive during their struggles for food and territory. Our reptilian ancestors were changing their bodies and these new features are evident in our human bodies today. One of these features that link us to our reptilian ancestors is the yolk sac which is evident in the human embryo as well as the eggs of reptiles. As reptiles adapted to life on a dry earth, they needed to keep their eggs from drying out an so evolved a new type of egg which enclosed the embryos in an amnion filled sac and covered it with a hard shell. Reptiles and humans both carry the yolk gene but it is no longer functional in humans as we evolved and no longer needed yolk to feed our embryos. But those broken yolk genes are still in our genome and link us to these ancient egg laying animals. Skin is another important feature that connects us to reptiles. In order to withstand the dry air on land, reptiles developed layers of dead skin to insulate them and create a water tight barrier. Humans have inherited these same layers of dead skin to prevent our bodies from drying out. Our skin not only protects our bodies but it is responsible for other features which we share with our reptilian ancestors; important structures that originate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. The Wanderings Of Odysseus And The Odyssey And The Odyssey In Edith Hamilton s book, Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes and in The Wanderings of Odysseus from The Odyssey the epic poem by Homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald, Jason and Odysseus display the following similar traits throughout their adventures: selfishness, dishonesty, and delegate. Throughout Jason and Odysseus adventures, they both showed a great amount of selfishness. Selfishness is the act of being selfish, lacking consideration for others. On Jason s quest to finding the Golden Fleece, the author mentions, ...he thought of ambition only, never of love or of gratitude (Hamilton 133). During the long quest for the Golden Fleece, Jason was only focused on being successful, not much different from Odysseus. While on Odysseus voyage there had been fierce cannibals who bombarded the fleet of ships with boulders. Selfishness played apart of this misdemeanor because Odysseus didn t seem to care to help out the rest of his crew, Only Odysseus, his ship, and its crew of 45 survive the shower of boulders. The lone ship then sails to Aeaea, home of the goddess Circe, who is considered by many to be a witch (Fitzgerald 1224). Both scenarios from Hamilton s book and Fitzgerald s book are very similar. The main characters both seem like they only care about themselves being successful and they don t fully put thought into their mentor s health. Mentors are the people who have intentions to helping out. The mentor in The Mythology would be Medea and in The Odyssey, it would have been his crew, who did not survive on the other ships. They may have not been aware that they were being selfish because they were busy having their mind set on having to stay alive and complete the duty. In effect of having their minds only set on getting the job done, all three of these characteristics have played a part of it. A great amount of dishonesty had played a part on the way of Jason and Odysseus adventures. In Edith Hamilton s book, Jason showed dishonesty by taking all the glory when many people helped along the way, All that she did evil and of good was done for him alone, and in the end, all the reward she got was that he turned traitor to her (Hamilton 133). It has a basic theme that we are still making movies about today, justice and what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in our search for it. It is a story of a journey that one man has to make in order for him to care for his children but it ends up being so much more of a journey than he anticipates. The buildings were dark, small and gloomy on the inside and due to the fact that the majority of the movie took place in the nighttime hours and it was stormy more than not, the outside was just as gloomy as the inside. The lighting was minimal as it would have been back then bringing mood with it. The foreshadowing of the stormy weather worked in making this movie what it was, the rain seemed to let you know when something was coming. As much as the wilderness scenery was beautiful, I found it downplayed by the drab colors of the costumes and the non use of color throughout the entire film. It seemed as though the only time color was used was determined by what that particular scene was about. For instance, as English Bob came into town the only item of color was the drab red of the stagecoach, so we knew whoever was in that stagecoach was going to become an important character to a scene coming up, everything else was a muted earth tone of tan, brown, green and blue. As stated in our text a director may simply let their settings just be a backdrop and let the action of that scene take over. (Boggs Petrie, 2008, pg. 374) This was exactly how this movie was told; it focused on the story instead of glamorizing it with colorful costumes and scenery. We needed to see the drabness of the subject in the muted colors of the movie. Rousseau s The Social Contract The following texts, Rousseau s The Social Contract, Marx s Private Property and Communism, Estranged Labor and Money, all differentiate between a general will, and a more personal, individual will. However, Rousseau s and Marx s theories of a general will, or collective being have discrepancies in both the origin and implications of general will and individual will. Rousseau defines general will as a collective desire to advance society towards a common goal. Additionally, Rousseau believes that self interests are often detrimental to the common good, stating that each individual, as a man, may have a particular will contrary or dissimilar to the general will which he has as a citizen. His particular interest may speak to him quite differently from the common interest: his absolute and naturally independent existence may make him look upon what he owes to the common cause as a gratuitous contribution... The continuance of such an injustice could not but prove the undoing of the body politic. (Rousseau, 194 195). It is evident that Rousseau is aware of humankind s selfish desires stemming from a personal will, and he believes that if individuals begin to ignore the common will and instead act upon their personal desires and will, that it will often lead to pandemonium. This chaos is likely to destroy any Republic, as conflicting and selfish ideals will cause individuals to lose sight of the general will, leading to the collapse of a coexisting society. Rousseau, however, does not address how individual will originates, a point that Marx discusses in length in his Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts. Mattlin expresses, My job as a physician is to ensure that people can see their inherent dignity reflected in they way they are cared for (Mattlin). He debates the issues on how active euthanization it is not ratified enough to become nationally acceptable due to the evidence of no complications found within the state of Oregon. Mattlin powerfully expresses that actively having the option to end ones life is unjust and should not be made legal. Given the concluding data made in the state of Oregon, He believes that a person should not be able to make a decision for them or for another on the act of terminating a life. Therefore, he persuasively projects the reasoning of why a human life, disabled or frail, should not have to choose death to become dignified. Advertisements will be aired on MTV, and products will be sold in places like Target and Best Buy. These are all smart tactics to get the product in front of the target market. Trends in the market include the growing number of people within the 15 29 age range. Also, phones are being used for much more than just calling, other functions like texting and music playing capabilities have dominated much of a user s data usage. As for market characteristics, the mobile industry has reached almost 50% penetration with about 130 million subscribers, and reaching its maturity. • 21. Eastwood s Sudden Impact Film Analysis In the first scene of Eastwood s Sudden Impact, the audience is presented with a scene in which a car is surrounded by thick, dark fog, making the background difficult to make out. If not for the diegetic sound of the crashing waves a few hundred feet below the edge of the near by precipice, the audience would have a lack of sense of location. Already, the scene has an ominous feel to it thanks to the darkness of the scene and the remoteness of the location where nobody is there to witness what is about to happen, and just like that, the audience knows Eastwood has put somebody to no good. The scene switches to the likewise dark interior of the car, in which a man and Jen are making out. The close up shot of the two changes to an extreme ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As it rains cats and dogs in the dark night, Munny, having sent off the kid with the money, walks into town straight into the whorehouse, where Little Bill is discussing a plan of catching the murderers (Munny and the kid). Before Munny kills Little Bill, Little Bill tells him that he doesn t deserve to die like this, to which Munny replies, Deserve s got nothing to do with it. The 2008 poem alludes to a Wilco song of the same name, wherein the speaker describes his heartache after leaving his lover and facing regret concerning the situation. This is alluded to in stanzas 12 and 13 when Young writes ... I assassin / down the avenue, (22 23) the second line of the song. Without taking note of this allusion, the poem would seem as if Young is portraying himself as a manipulator seeking to gain power over his lover. But through referencing the 2002 song I am Trying to Break Your Heart by Jeff Tweedy, Young clarifies his intent. The poem is meant to illustrate the chaotic and destructive nature of healing from emotional damage, showing how a love lost can leave an individual scarred and vengeful. Young begins the poem by indirectly addressing his lover, saying I am hoping / to hang your head. This creates a dark tone from the offset, implying that the speaker wants to harm the intended recipient of the poem. He then goes on in the second stanza to say he would hang the lover s head on his wall in shame. This evokes an image of taxidermy, which is meant to objectify and dehumanize the ... Allen (2001) designed a study that focused on the mere exposure effect, which states that more exposure to a stimulus results in a positive affect toward that stimulus. Numerous studies have been conducted based on cognitive responses, but this study focused on the affective responses. The main purpose of the study was to accept or reject (test) the hypothesis that mere exposure influences affective responses using other measures than a cognitive response, such as self report. They would test this by measuring facial electromyographic or EMG responses to the stimuli, thus measuring emotional responses. They also had three other hypothesis that dealt with the main hypothesis but were more specific. They alos hypothesized that familiar stimuli would stimulate a larger zygomatic (cheek) muscle region activity and/or smaller corrugator (brow) muscle region activity compared to novel stimuli and that motivational responses would be affected by familiarity when evaluating frontal cortical activity. This means crazy fans going topless, painting their torso one color, incise a letter to spell out their team s name, and excessive screaming. It is such an interesting atmosphere to be in. • 43. Egoism, Psychological And Ethical, And Altruism From the moment you are born, you are being influenced. Influenced on what to wear, how to do your hair, how to speak, whom to associate with, etc. All of these criteria make up who you are. These influences determine how you think and what you believe. With all these influences in our daily lives we inevitably do actions throughout the day, and our actions have consequences. Some consequences are good and some are bad, but based on our actions are there ulterior motives involved? Do we do things to solely benefit ourselves or do we sometimes do things to help out others and the greater good of mankind? These questions bring to the surface the topics of egoism, psychological and ethical, and altruism. Egoism in general means that people think of their own advantage. They have high opinions of themselves and dote on themselves. Meaning they live and breathe off of self praise. Most of the time this word has a negative connotation to it, and it is looked down upon (Flynn 459). Egoism falls into two categories: psychological and ethical. The term psychological egoism refers to the mindset that there is no such thing as a self less act. For example, if someone does a good deed, they have a hidden motive behind their deed. Whether they want attention, praise, or accolades from performing the deed, they did not do it just to help someone out (Rosenstand 164). During this interview, I noticed that we all have different attitudes and personalities that depend on how we are raised, environmental factors, experiences, and cultural beliefs. I begin my interview by asking my interviewee basic information. His is a twenty year old guy who is interested in playing football, listening to the music, and surfing the internet. The guardian of time honored institutions and very dependable. I scored introverted, sensing, judging, and thinking. What do people usually perspective about motivation? Do we do things because we like doing it? This is what is known as intrinsically motivated. Or we do things in purpose? Getting a reward, or token from someone? This type of motivation is extrinsically motivated. I think most of us prefer to be intrinsically motivated. We like to have fun on what we do instead of being forced to do something that we don t want to. I and my interviewee are the same, we rather do something that we like to do instead doing something that we don t want and have something in return. One of my evaluations in my interview profile is self monitoring. It is the tendency of an individual to observe the situation for cues about how to react. I ask my interviewee if he monitors his attitude toward a situation. He responded, I monitor my attitude when it comes to other people that I am not comfortable with or to people that I am not emotionally close. • 45. If Democracy Had A Birth Date If democracy had a birth date, it would be June 15, 1215. On that fateful day, on the meadow called Runnymede along the River Thames, English barons confronted a tyrannical King John to demand that their list of grievances be addressed. In the 63 clauses of the esteemed Magna Carta, the barons were largely concerned with protecting themselves from unjust taxes and defending their rights and privileges. However, the Magna Carta accomplished so much more. It established for the first time the principle that the king is not above the law. Also within the historical document are the core principles the rule of law and the law of the land that have resonated with nations in search of freedom and justice. In fact, nearly six centuries after King ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the first colonists arrived in Jamestown, West Virginia in 1607, they carried with them their hopes, dreams, fears, and most importantly, the individual liberties and established rights that were their birthright as Englishmen. By the 1600s, these colonists subjects of England had enjoyed political freedoms, such as trial by jury, largely unheard of elsewhere in the world. The Magna Carta, signed centuries before on the plains of Runnymede in 1215, had established the principle of limited government. That meant that the power of the king was not absolute. According to the principles of mercantilism, the colonies main function was to bolster the mother country, both economically and politically. The American colonies were set up as a source of raw materials for England. They were expected to export valuable commodities, such as cotton, lumber, tar, gold, and silver, among other things. They were regarded as English subjects and possessions of the mother country. Over time, the colonists, forced to straddle two worlds, both England and America, rebelled. Their primary source of anger and frustration was that they were being severely taxed without having a voice in Parliament. After the Sugar Act passed in 1765, Samuel Adams, who saw it as a violation of their birth rights and liberties, won the support of the Massachusetts Assembly and declared: If taxes are laid upon us in any shape ... • 46. Shattering the Glass House of Mirth Essay Shattering the Glass House where ignorance is bliss, / Tis folly to be wise. Thomas Gray The title of Edith Wharton s novel The House of Mirth waxes poetic irony in the case of the old money society of turn of the century New York. The individual as part of the collective of society which seeks to oppress individuality is representative of the house in the novel s title. To remain ignorant and play by the rules, therein lies the mirth. Clearly, the victimization of the story s heroine, Lily Bart, by the elite social set she associates herself with illustrates Wharton s disdain for the rigidity of this society against the individual. Lily is, at first, an example of the collective society she is a product of; however, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wharton s representation of the power of the social class of turn of the century New York is expressed through the struggle between the individual and the collective force of society. The rules of society define each individual s place, and it is the group that reflects shared beliefs and dictates behavior. This dichotomy is multi layered, reaching all the way down to the deep internal struggle of the individual human being. Lily s struggle with her individuality and the need to play by the rules causes her to commit social blunders and become an innocent victim of society s harsh cruelty. At the beginning of the novel, Lily is aware of and acts according to the rules which subscribe to the Manichean principle: One must consistently act in one way or the other there is no in between. There is no distance between the internal and the external for Lily at this point, which is the root of her innocence, but she is vaguely aware that something is happening to her. She longs for escape from routine (19) but is still conscious of the fact that escape does not come without a price. Lily is never able to do a natural thing without having to screen it behind a structure of artifice (19). She is innocent in intent, and because of this she indulges herself with her little escapes from time to time without much thought to the consequences until after the fact. Her attempts to ignore or mask her social indiscretions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
