BP Chemicals implemented a large supply chain management project across 17 business units over multiple years using AspenTech's software. The project was highly successful due to excellent project management, which included lessons learned from an initial phase. Key lessons included staggering sub-projects, developing initial "rough-cut" models for user feedback, defining central and local management roles, balancing standardization and customization, and ongoing budgeting for maintenance and improvements.

Closing the Gap on Digital Manufacturing
The concurrent engineering required for new product designs between design
engineering and manufacturing engineering has always been a critical
focal point for manufacturers to shorten time-to-market, accelerate time-tovolume,
and minimize cost of production. Today, collaboration between
product design (CAD) and manufacturing processes
(CAM) is a robust process due to tight
integration between CAD and CAM and the emergence
of extended PDM and PLM systems.
However, there has not been a corresponding
level of tight integration between CAD/CAM and
production management. But the benefits of exchanging
information between the product
definition domain and production management are becoming clear as
manufacturers move to a collaborative environment. Two leading PLM
suppliers, EDS and IBM/Dassault, have recently launched new programs
to integrate these disparate domains.
CHAPTER 3
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
THE ESSENCE OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT
“First, have a definite, clear practical ideal; a goal, an objective. Second, have the necessary means to achieve your ends; wisdom, money, materials, and methods. Third, adjust all your means to that end.”
—Aristotle, ancient Greek philosopher and scientist
THE BBC DIGITAL MEDIA INITIATIVE
In 2007, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) launched the Digital Media Initiative, an IT project meant to digitize media production and media asset management across the organization. Originally estimated at a cost of £80 million ($128 million), DMI was intended to introduce a tape- less workflow—from raw footage to finished programs—and give BBC staff immediate desktop access to the entire BBC archive. It was predicted that the DMI would save the company 2.5 percent in media production costs per hour, bringing a return of £100 million ($160 million) by 2015. In 2008, the BBC awarded the contract to Siemens, its long-time technology partner; however, that partnership broke down in 2009, with neither company taking direct responsibility for the failure. Rather, the two companies issued a statement saying, “The media environment has changed a great deal since the DMI project began, and both organizations have been in discussions about the way forward. The BBC and Siemens have reached an agreement that allows the BBC to complete the
Chapter 3
project in-house.” DMI was dubbed the “Don’t Mention It” project and delegated to the BBC’s chief
62
technical architect and executive producer.
Once in-house, however, DMI ran into a series of obstacles. Behind schedule, the IT team struggled to get end users to commit to firm project requirements and priorities. “Throughout the project, the team informed me that the biggest single challenge facing the project was the changes to requirements requested by the business,” said the former chief technology officer John Linwood. The result was a constantly fluctuating project scope.
In addition, the technology team sought to adopt an agile development approach, so that the software would be produced bit-by-bit, with the business units exploring each incremental release as it was developed. Linwood claims, however, that the business units did not want to take the time to test the releases. Eventually, the IT team simply developed major system components with minimal business unit testing. Meanwhile, the project was falling further and further behind sched- ule. In addition, the BBC did not assign anyone the responsibility or the authority to oversee the adoption of the program by the business units, depriving the DMI of effective project integration management. Because the transition from tape-based production and asset management to digital production and asset management necessitated a significant shift in work processes, management of the adoption and integration of the DMI into business units was essential.

1. Executive Summary
In December 2008, the company began to receive heavy surcharge from local authorities because of their poor water quality, mainly due to an excess of biological waste entering the sewer system.
Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) The amount of oxygen needed by bacteria to decompose all the solid wastes in wastewater. Accounted for 74% of the resulting fees. The total bill for poor water quality reached $204,000 in 2009.
A six-sigma team was tasked to extremely reduce the BOD, after 6 months they reached 70% with a goal of 95%.

BizFlow - BPM at Jardine Lloyd Thompson for Sales, Document Handling, Custome...Garth Knudson
As far back as 2004, JLT EB started using business process management (BPM) to streamline a limited set of business operations. Use was confined to about 30 people in a “model office”. During that same time period, JLT acquired Profund, a leading provider of pension administration software in the UK. Customers included both in-house and third-party administrators. Profund had seen opportunities to expand its pension fund administration solutions into specific areas of process automation while helping customers to simplify the overall user experience. Deciding to use the current BPM tool, the company developed outward facing solutions that rolled out to end customers in 2007. BPM usage at JLT EB and Profund grew to about 300 users.
Between 2007-2010, JLT made more than 20 acquisitions globally across the group. JLT EB operations quickly became highly complex, distributed and paper-based. Employees were handling millions of documents annually covering Pension Administration, Payroll, Defined Contributions, Actuarial, Health and Risk, among other requests. Processes treated more than 16 million workflow elements, 300+ million rows of table data and 15 million SharePoint documents. The BPM solution covers 14 active offices in Europe and India, off-shoring and massive amounts of regulations. The company knew that in order to continuing growing at the same speed while containing costs, it would have to do more with less.
JLT EB accomplished its goals of increased revenues with lower costs with continual investment in BPM. JLT EB has worked with BizFlow and used the BizFlow BPM software to streamline >200 processes. From an ROI standpoint, this work has provided a key business component, contributing to JLT EB’s growth in trading profit by 50% in the last financial year. Revenue growth is enabled by more flexible solutions that can be highly tailored to internal client needs as well as end-customer engagements. Cost cutting is enabled through the use of process automation tied together with effective scanning, document handling and rule-based routing. Paper is largely removed, deadlines hit, and governance accomplished.
If your projects involve other companies doing most of the work, then this presentation can open the door to faster, better and less expensive projects. You don't have to spend more to get your project sooner. Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) has worked wonders in many industries..but has not had much impact in sectors such as construction. Current Automation Purchasing Strategies Fall Short
End users today have a paradoxical relationship with their suppliers. Primary
business drivers in today’s environment include maximizing asset
utilization, enhancing plant performance, and reducing capital, maintenance,
and operational expenditures, but many manufacturers employ
purchasing strategies and supplier relationship management strategies developed
during the heyday of the 1980s. Rather than
focusing on achievement of today’s objectives, the
current environment is characterized by an approach
that relies primarily on initial cost, driving discounts
off list price, and failure to employ a lifecycle costing
perspective.

Conoco on Path to Reliability Centered Loop Management: Enhancing ROA on the WayARC Advisory Group
Conoco on Path to Reliability Centered Loop Management: Enhancing ROA on the Way
Process manufacturers have invested heavily in manufacturing plants and
automation systems. A typical manufacturing plant may have hundreds or
even thousands of regulatory control loops to enable safe and efficient operations.
The most complex units often have advanced process control and
optimization schemes implemented on top of these regulatory control
loops. All of these systems have a need for
tighter process control to enable more effective
use of assets that result in higher ROA and ultimately
better business performance and
profitability.
Unfortunately, automation effectiveness deteriorates
over time. The lack of a structured
methodology for control loop maintenance is a
contributing factor that erodes performance. A
manufacturing plant typically has only two or three control engineers who
each have responsibility for a large of number of loops, yet they often have
no means of identifying where to focus their efforts so that their work has
the largest economic impact on plant performance.

Component Based Solutions Well Aligned with Needs of Service Logistics Providers
Service Logistics supply chains are very dynamic. Achieving customer satisfaction
depends not only delivering the right parts, but also the right
people, the right tools and the right information to the right place at the
right time. Two Service Logistics providers, TNT and IMI Bevcore, concluded
that in order to effectively enable their processes,
they had to implement logistics software
based on component-assembly architectures.

These advancements in electro-hydraulics technology
create opportunities for users to optimize
their investments in automation solutions by selectively

Collaborative Asset Lifecycle Management Vision and StrategiesARC Advisory Group
Collaborative Asset Lifecycle Management Vision and Strategies
Capital asset management is once again becoming a key managerial concern.
Organizations that have been focusing on developing new products,
expanding services, and making supply chains super-efficient are now facing
challenging markets and expensive overcapacity. Survival demands
that they reduce their cost basis and capital assets, one of their largest expenses,
which are becoming the target for these efforts.
Discussions about postponing asset purchases and eliminating non-critical
assets are dominating many executive agendas. But lack of information
makes any decision a gamble. The importance of an effective capital asset
management strategy that minimizes the need for such discussions and
enables executives to confidently make necessary
decisions is becoming painfully clear.
Manufacturers are used to market swings and frequently
adjust their product inventories to match
reduced demand forecasts. The rapidity of this
“inventory alignment” for the current situation is
clear testament to the effectiveness of new supply
chain management technology. But the persistence
of this slowdown is forcing all organizations
to consider the more complex issue of “structural
Cautious Optimism Pervades Hanover Fair
With the war in Iraq, stumbling European economies and a mysterious flulike
epidemic from Asia, the Hanover Fair opened its gates last week with
three strikes against it. But despite the subdued
atmosphere, exhibitors expressed cautious optimism
about signs of a recovery in automation
markets. This year a number of automation
suppliers showed surprisingly innovative products
centered on real-time Ethernet, which
finally proved that it’s ready to conquer the factory
floor.
Capital Expenditure Survey 2003
Capital spending continues to decline in nearly all industries, continuing a
trend that began in the mid-1990s when manufacturing productivity began
to increase markedly. The continuing uncertainty in most economies has
put pressure on manufacturers to cut spending, resulting in a steady decline
for several years now despite increasing revenues. Helping to fuel the
cost-cutting fire are the mega-mergers between industrial giants that have
racked up billions in savings as companies increase their manufacturing
economies of scale and eliminate duplicate functions.
ARC’s CapEx index tracks capital expenditures, total revenue, total assets,
EBIT, and return on assets (ROA) for 56 companies in 10 target industries,
representing $2.4 trillion in annual revenue. Companies in the index
generate revenue from most global markets and many
spread their manufacturing around the globe. Of the 56
companies, 64 percent have their headquarters in North
America, 27 percent in Europe, and 9 percent in Asia.

rough-cut model
• Define central and local project
management roles and responsibilities
• Clarify policy regarding standardization
vs localization
• Budget 5 to 10 percent/year of project
costs for support, maintenance, and
continuous improvement

Best Practices:
Implement Massive SCM Projects

Summary
Managers currently regard large, multi-site, multi-year Supply Chain Man-
agement (SCM) implementations as too risky. Indeed, such projects require
extremely skilled project management. BP Chemicals implemented Aspen-
tech’s MIMI supply chain management solution across 17 businesses. It
was a huge, highly successful project, largely because of excellent project
management.
BP Chemicals
BP Chemicals manufactures petrochemicals, intermediates, and plastics,
which includes acetic acid, acrylonitrile, aromatics, purified terephthalic
acid (PTA), olefins, polyethylene, and polypro-
pylene. With 35 manufacturing sites
worldwide, BP Chemicals produces around 27
million tons of product a year. The supply
chain planning task is huge, around 100 unique
products, several thousand SKUs due to grade
and pack types, thousands of customers, and
hundreds of delivery points.
Project drivers were fairly typical of most large
chemical companies. By BP standards prior to
implementation, forecast accuracy, data and
information visibility, customer responsiveness (e.g. right product in right
place), were unsatisfactory. Some businesses had problems completing
their monthly planning cycle within four weeks, and purchasing would
procure against out of date forecasts. In addition, BP wanted to run proac-
tively, with a better understanding of customers’ requirements and wanted
to react faster to order changes.
