Electrons in atoms occupy different energy levels based on their distance from the nucleus. Higher energy levels are farther from the nucleus. When an electron moves from a higher to lower energy level, a photon of light is emitted. This light emitted from the movement of charged particles is called radiation. Electrons seek to occupy the lowest possible energy level.
