Hopefully, in a few years’ time college instructors will find that the students entering their classes are better prepared. But what do we do in the meantime? The ability to embed student success skills into the course curriculum is essential so that students can develop techniques that will improve their chances of success throughout their college career.
The following topics were shared during the presentation: concept mapping, critical thinking, tips for proper reading of a textbook, time management, notetaking tips, how to condense information covered in class, and how to research and write a paper.
The challenge of teaching student success skills during the semester is that of completing all required course information at the same time. Participants were asked to discuss potential methods of creating time within their courses so that student success techniques could be taught.

A fresh look at vascularized flexor tendon transfers
This document summarizes a study on vascularized flexor tendon transfers for secondary flexor tendon reconstruction. The authors present results from their surgical experience using vascularized tendon transfers in 71 cases over 20 years. Their technique is based on an understanding of the sliding mechanisms and microvascular architecture of flexor tendons. - 2. Why is it important to have a plan? Remember the saying: If you’re failing to plan, you’re planning to fail! If you know what you need to do each day to get your work done, you’ll have a goal…right?
- 3. What’s the plan? Open My Grades to see which assignments you have completed and which you haven’t completed. Download and open your Assignment Schedule. If you have a grade on an assignment, you know you’ve completed that assignment. (Remember to read my comments) If you don’t have a grade and you don’t see an assignment file waiting to be graded, mark that on your Assignment Schedule as an assignment you need to complete.
- 4. What do I do next? Count the number of assignments you need to complete to become current. (Check your Assignment Schedule…Every assignment is listed with a due date).. Divide the number of assignments you need to complete to become current by the number of days you have to become current. Example: If you have not completed 4 assignments in Module 2 and you have 2 days to finish everything through Module 2, you must complete 2 assignments a day to become current! It’s that easy!
- 5. How can I be successful in this class? When you do “something” every day, you form the habit of going into your course regularly. Remember, this is a class just like those you attend on your high school campus. When you don’t access your course, you haven’t attended class that day. A report within your course gives your teacher information about how many days, or hours it’s been since you accessed this course. When you do something each day, you don’t fall so far behind that you feel overwhelmed by the remaining work due.
