This document outlines strategies for effective listening. It discusses the importance of listening with an 11 second average attention span. There are three levels of listening presented: empathic listening, hearing but not listening, and listening in spurts. Barriers to listening like judging and problem-solving are covered. Developing attending, following, and reflecting skills can help overcome barriers. Controlling nonverbal behavior, creating a listening environment, and considering speaker nonverbal cues are recommended. Open-ended questions are presented as a tool to use listening.
