MUSIC TV CHANNELS
Music channels are TV channels that generally host a variety
of their own chart shows and award prizes. By having music
on a music channel it helps to distribute the artists’ work and
promotes them through the use of music videos.
Although there is a diversity in terms if the genres
represented in the music industry, there is a common
denominator in terms of the type of artist that finds their way
through the mainstream media. Artists that don’t conform to
the image suitable for mainstream audiences will be left out.
Therefore, the radical genres have been filtered in favor of a
politically correct representation. There will always be genres,
people and artists that will never be represented in media
because they are uncomfortable, controversial artists.

at rock music fans.

was popular in the 80s/90s. Where as most other channels
play new music.

Synergy of Music Channels
Viacom Inc. is an American multinational
media conglomerate, it is currently one of
the 6 worlds largest broadcasting and cable
company. In 2005 its founder Sumner
Redstone started by buying theater
companies.
Viacom is both horizontally and vertically
integrated. Horizontally as it brought
multiple TV channels such as MTV,
Nickelodeon and Comedy Central. It is also
vertically integrated as it has its own means
of production, development, distribution
and marketing.
By acquiring music channels such as MTV,
VIVA and VH1 it can now promote artists
from the record companies it owns (nick
records, comedy central records). It can also
sell air time to other record companies so
they can promote their artists. This is an
example of synergy.
Comcast Corporation is an American global
telecommunications conglomerate, which is
also one of the 6 largest broadcasting and
cables television company in the world.
It started with two business partners
purchasing American Cable Systems and
renaming it Comcast Corporations. Comcast
began as a 5 channel cable company. As their
market share increased they became
horizontally integrated by purchasing more and
more channels.
In 2013Comcast brought NBC Universal off
General Electric. NBC Universal then vertically
integrated by creating a music record label.
Now Universal music has many world famous
artists sign it can pay companies like Viacom to
aired their artists on music channels such as
MTV and VH1 etc. This is done through synergy.
Underrepresentation of music channels
Underrepresented Music
Genre
TV Channels About
Classica, Mezzo TV Classical music is underrepresented on TV
due to the fact there are no classical music
videos as they are typically 7-10 minutes
long. This means on classical music
channels such as Classica and Mezzo TV
would only have videos of the orchestra
making it less appealing to the mainstream
audience. More over, it doesn’t have lyrics
which is another reason why it is not as
popular.
P-Rock Punk music is underrepresented as genres
such as hip-hop and dance are dominating.
Another reason its underrepresented is
because punk music videos usually portrays
uncomfortable behavior and attitudes
toward the hegemonic ideology
represented in mainstream media.
Real Jamaican TV Reggae music is underrepresented as it
doesn't’t appeal to the mainstream culture
in the UK and US. Even though many
people enjoy listening to reggae, it is
regarded more as an ethnic genre. This
means that it won’t appeal to a mainstream
audience, where as mainstream music
doesn’t focus on any certain ethnic group
and can appeal to a wider majority.
