This document introduces basic terminology used in pharmacy. It defines pharmacy as derived from the Greek word for medicine or drug. Pharmaceutical refers to a place for producing medicine and drugs. Pharmaceutics is the study of formulation, manufacturing, evaluation, and packaging of drug dosage forms. Medicine is defined as a chemical substance that can cure or heal diseases safely with minimal toxicity and without causing addiction. A drug is any substance that affects the function of living cells and is used for diagnosis, cure, prevention or protection from diseases. Dose refers to the amount of a drug taken, and dosage form is how the drug is delivered in the body.
