• A Bank refers to “an institution that accepts
the deposits of money from the public,
repayable on demand and used for lending
purpose only.”
• The term “Lending” means the lending of
money to the borrowers and not financing of
its business needs.

• The Banking System in India was set up in the
year 1881 with the establishment of the first
bank called “The Oudh Commercial Bank”
followed by setting up of Punjab National
Bank (PNB) in the year 1894.
• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) act as the
central bank and monetary authority in the
country and as a leader of the Indian banking
system.

• Commercial Banks refers to the banks which
operates on a large scale i.e. it caters to the
needs of the large number of people and are
popular among the masses like SBI, PNB, BOB
etc.
• They operate not only at national level but
also provide service to their clients at
international level also.

REGIONAL RURAL BANKS (RRBs)
• Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) refers to the
banks providing credit and deposits facilities
to the small and marginal farmers, agricultural
labourers, artisans and small entrepreneurs.
• They are also providing services unlike
commercial banks but their area of operation
is generally limited to a district.
• Example:- Delhi Nagrik Sehakari Bank.

COOPERATIVE BANKS
• Cooperative Banks refers to those banks
which are mainly set up in villages to promote
saving habits among the farmers and to meet
their credit needs.
• Example: Gramin bank.
