A2 media studies- music video analysis

1. The image on the top left is from
a music video called ‘All about
that Bass’ by Meghan Trainor.
Meghan is a blue eyed soul/doo
whoop pop artist. This type of
music is targeted at young girls
and everything is exaggerated.
The mis en scene in these videos
are bright colours as we can see
image. The pink background and
baby blue stand out and make
the video seem more
entertaining and is visually
appealing.
The bottom right image is an
establishing shot from the music
video ‘Last Friday Night’ by Katy
Perry. Katy Perry is a pop artist
that also follows the typical
conventions of a lively pop song.
The establishing shot has high key
lighting making the shot look
pleasent. Throughout the whole
video we get this kind of lighting.

2. In this image Meghan is in a
pink bedroom with a doll
house next to her. The mis en
scene in this image is
presenting her in a feminine
but childlike way. These
props are specifically used as
the audience are likely to
associate themselves with
these toys. Moreover, the
bright clothing is emphasising
her girliness making her
seem fragile and innocent.
This shot of Katy Perry is also
emphasising her girly behaviour.
However, this is targeted at older
audiences such as teenage girls
from about the age of 13-15. This
song is the most relatable to them
as they are likely to experience
partying at this age. The narrative
of this music video is a good girl
who parties and wakes up with a
hangover and messy house. The
mis en scene in this image tell us
she is a ‘nerd’ due to the glasses
and braces.

3. In pop music there is a lot of
performance and concept. Typically
this how music videos from the
pop genre are. The dancing and the
chorus of the songs are usually
catchy and therefore young girls
are likely to enjoy this type of
music. In ‘All about the Bass’ the
video is more childlike as it is trying
to socialise young girls into loving
themselves regardless of what size
they are. The lyrics are innocent as
she says ‘And every inch of you is
perfect’. The clothes worn by the
singer and actresses are not
revealing but colourful making the
whole video appropriate for young
girl.
However, in the video ‘Last Friday
Night’ the females are wearing
tight and revealing clothes to some
extent. The lyrics are more suitable
for them as she sings ‘”there’s a
stranger in my bed”

4. This dancing man is used in
the video to portray the
message of loving yourself. It
is trying to portray the man as
an inspiration for being able
to dance with confidence and
sass. The background and
colours are still bright and
there is high key lighting
throughout the music video
making the video vibrant and
cheerful.
The image on the bottom
right is from the video
from ‘Last Friday Night’.
The image is showing
young adults recklessly
partying which portrays
the as rebellious. The
reason why there are
many explicit scenes in
this video is because
young teenagers are
likely to experience this
kind of carelessness

5. In this song there are two girls young girls
who are featured in the video. Both are
dancing and having fun, they are the age
of the target audience and are used in
the video to encourage young girls to
dance along to the song. The girls are
dressed in pink making them look
feminine. However, the colour blue is
used which is subverting the femininity.
the colour blue is associated with boys.
However, due to the changes in social
attitudes perhaps the colour blue was
used to be more accepting towards
genders, promotion equality.
This image of Katy Perry is different to
her first look. This is towards the end
when she finally decides to party with
the crowd. She is dressed in bright
colours with heavy make up and crazy
hair. She is also wearing slightly
revealing clothes which is typically how
woman would dress. The bold hair and
make up could represent how she is
finally wearing make up and wants to
stand out therefore goes over the top.
The target audience are likely to be
introduced to make up and play
around with it.

6. In this image Meghan is
moving her finger left and
right saying ‘No trouble’ this
means she is saying there is
no trouble in not being skinny
as there is no specific
definition in beauty. This links
the visuals with the lyrics
making the song more catchy.
Furthermore, the balloons in
the background are used to
attract the target audience.In this image, Katy Perry is imagining
both guys fighting for her almost like
a fairytale; where she is the princess
and the prince who wins the battle
takes her home! The target audience
is likely to imagine having fairy tale
love stories. In pop music love is a
theme that constantly shown in
music videos. The older audience are
shown love through boyfriend/
girlfriend relationships whereas
videos that are targeted at younger
audiences are likely to be about
loving themselves.
