This document summarizes a numerical study of the impact response and ballistic limit of AA2024 friction stir welded aircraft panels. The study aims to simulate the behavior of friction stir welded aircraft panels subjected to impacts through finite element analysis and experimental testing. The summary models different regions of the weld with unique material properties and anisotropy levels. Impact simulations are conducted with hard projectiles and bird models to predict the ballistic limit across the weld region and compare to base material behavior. Future work includes modeling the sheet with a smoothed particle hydrodynamics approach and validating the weld region material models through impact experiments on simulated weld samples.
