AWE USA 2019: AR Cloud: Promises and pitfalls Jason Fox | Microsoft Jan-Erik Vinje | Open AR Cloud In this talk Jan-Erik will present his vision of how AR Cloud tecnology can enable a digital upgrade of our shared physical reality and how that holds the promise of enhansing every aspect of our digital lives you can imagine and beyond. The AR industry needs this technology to be able to realize what futurist and sci-fi authors have been envisioning for the last few decades and what the speaker himself has been dreaming of since his teenage years. On the flip side of the great potential that AR Cloud holds for good, there is also the real risk of falling into "Black Mirror" scenarios. If we are careless about this technology things might descend towards a digital prison rather than a digital upgrade. Already we see how Shenzhen, China is using exponential technology to monitor and track every person everywhere - the invasiveness of this practice will become much worse if or when the authorities deploy AR-Cloud technology. Towards the end of his talk, Jan-Erik will also say a few words about how Open AR Cloud is bringing together people from all over the world to build an open and interoperable spatial computing ecosystem for the benefit of all. Our devices will change dramatically and change us in ways no one can fully predict. Convergence tells the story of Augmented Reality, a new technology that’s seeping into every smartphone and every workplace. But the smartphone is just the beginning. We will soon wonder how we put up with its miserable form for so long. In this presentation of key ideas from his new book, author and Forbes columnist Charlie Fink will discuss how the convergence will lead to head-worn, interoperable AR/VR glasses and, ultimately, to wearable, invisible, computing. The book uses a kind of AR called "marker AR," to allow readers to use their smartphone to bring pages to life in surprising and entertaining ways to illustrate how the world, and everyone it, will be painted with data. As large-scale IoT deployments have started to become real organizations are realizing that a single central cloud can’t cope with the data security, data volumes, latency or robustness that they need for their businesses. Centralizing in a single cloud also offers a huge operational risk – if the cloud fails, their business must continue! This talk will introduce BRAIN-IoT, an EU Horizon 2020 funded project. BRAIN-IoT uses the latest OSGi R7 specifications to create an adaptive modular “Fog” environment with decentralized data processing and decision making. We’ll review the current design decisions made by the BRAIN-IoT team, including the issues concerning generic Edge Device discovery & integration, and see how they can be applied across different IoT use cases, including Smart Utilities and Industry 4.0 Factories of the Future.

The availability of affordable electronics components, powerful embedded microprocessors, and ubiquitous internet access and WiFi in the household has enabled a new generation of connected consumer robots. In 2015, iRobot launched the Roomba 980, introducing intelligent visual navigation to its successful line of vacuum cleaning robots. In 2018, iRobot launched the Roomba i7, equipped with the latest mapping and navigation technology that provides spatial information to the broader ecosystem of connected devices in the home. In this talk, I will describe the challenges and the potential of introducing consumer robots capable of developing spatial context by exploring the physical space of the home, and I will elaborate on the impact of AI in the future of robotics applications. Moreover, I will describe our vision of the Smart Home, an AI-powered home that maintains itself and magically just does the right thing in anticipation of occupant needs. This home will be built on an ecosystem of connected and coordinated robots, sensors, and devices that provides the occupants with a high quality of life by seamlessly responding to the needs of daily living – from comfort to convenience to security to efficiency.

As a IoT developer I value a system that I can leverage that can take away a lot of the complexity of communication, interoperability, security, updating, and lets me focus on my business logic and what I want to build. This talk will focus on the Windows 10 IoT Core OS and how to build IoT Apps for it, how to connect sensors and actuators to the GPIO of a Raspberry Pi running the W10 IoT Core, how to debug on that device, and how to connect it to the Azure Cloud in a secure way and use that cloud to control the device. This will be a technical talk with a lot of code and almost no slides, and a great opportunity to get to know these technologies in a bit more deepness.

We all see the cool demos of how augmented and virtual reality are going to be the future of our interaction with devices, but it often feels like there’s a significant barrier to getting started in building these types of apps. This session is here to help. If you’ve ever thought about developing for Oculus Rift S, HTC VIVE or the Windows Mixed Reality headsets, but haven’t known where to start, this is the session for you. At Azure day, I will present what I learned building a small game, set in a mysterious dungeon using Unity, the SteamVR plugin and Azure Cognitive Services. We'll explore how to import assets from the Unity store, how to implement locomotion techniques and interactions using the motion/touch controllers, including some tips for optimising performance and avoid motion sickness. Come along, there’ll be .NET code, demos and we’ll have some fun looking at how you can get started on your first VR/AR project enhanced by Azure and the intelligent cloud.

Our traveling exhibition goal is to show visitors they're smarter than they suspect, inspire students to aim for STEM careers, and help teachers lead deeper NGSS and Common Core dives both in and out of the classroom. We are not there yet to make use of such a user interface. We currently have individual islands of interactivity via AR. This conference may have many spatial demos as well, however, a single ubiquitous layer that penetrates all screens, surfaces, machines, and environments are not available. This is what the PTC Reality Lab researches. The core of this research is the ability to use AR in a scalable distributed platform to bridge among technological domains to allow the weaving of multiple technologies into one user experience. The resulting user experience is called One Reality. The goal for One Reality is to provide one seamless, ubiquitous flow of user experience for all technologies that touch the user’s decision making. This talk will iterate on the different stages of Augmented Reality User Interfaces and identifies One Reality as the 3rd stage in the evolution of AR user interfaces.
