Educating online/remote Future Engineering Leaders with Practical Competences...Manuel Castro
https://www.icwl-sete.eu/keynotes.html
This presentation will show the principles to include in our Engineering studies the practical competences and to show the long way we were involved during more than thirty years around distance/online education and the implementation of practical competences, the convergence with online learning in the use of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) in Engineering and the new way that we are facing after the main effects of the pandemic time where we should go a new era, more inclusive, diverse and personalized adapted for all.
The way we include the practical competences inside the engineering studies, problems, simulations, virtual, remote and pocket labs open a new era in those applications and the incoming immersive environments that drives us to a new hybrid environment as we are facing this in other important areas like industry or conferences. We will include in the presentation some introduction of the IEEE Education Society inside the area of educational activities and collaboration events as well as European projects like ECoVEM where we are applying some of those principles on the development.

Politecnico di Milano has started an initiative to innovate PoliMi’s teaching activities and techniques.
The Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria (DEIB) has started to work on this initiative and we are pleased to share with you the result of this, the so called “PEoPLe@DEIB: Politecnico Experiences on Passionate Learning” initiative.
The PEoPLE@DEIB goal is to present several courses, competitions and events that will make focus on some aspects of the engineering world – and not only – in a way of presenting these topics that is different from the one you experienced during your academic career in Politecnico.
These events will be scheduled and proposed in a way that will not impact the normal academic activities, and that is one of the reasons why we included “Passionate” in our slogan, they will be held in the late afternoon, in the evening and during the weekends. Don’t worry, it is extra work – it’s true – but it is only on a voluntary basis; you will decide what to attend to and whether to do it. You will get extra credits for the courses/activities that you decide to attend and these will be listed in your diploma supplement when you graduate.
We do have the perception that a close connection between research and education has to be pursued to properly prepare our students. Research and education is perceived as a dichotomy. It has often been hard to couple them in a productive and virtuous cycle but we do believe that Research can obtain great benefits from Teaching and the other way around and this basic principle is at the basis of all the PEoPLE@DEIB activities. In particular, involving young students in research activities will heavily increase the creative and brainstorming phase of a research group. Students are not yet constrained in a research framework and they are not scared by the idea of trying and failing to see their ideas coming reality through their work. On the contrary, from an educative point of view, giving the students the chance to be involved in real projects will mean giving them the chance to experience real design and development challenges and by guiding them during the design and development we can, in a maieutic way, teach them how to approach real life projects.
In such a context it is necessary to provide the students with an environment where they can work and experiment a motivating experience and this is exactly what we are doing with the PEoPLe@DEIB initiative.
We strongly believe that students are terrific, they are young, but that just means that they need to be properly trained and helped in understanding that failures are part of the learning process. Without trying, you are not going to fail, but without trying you cannot learn new things, you can not achieve greatness!
PEoPLE@DEIB is working towards this objectives, trying to make students more self-confident.

Bridging the digital divide: academic skills and digital literacies to suppor...RichardM_Walker
This presentation reflects on recent developments in the adoption of technology enhanced learning (TEL) tools within the UK higher education sector - in particular the rise of student-controlled and creative technologies to promote information, knowledge-sharing and networking in learning and teaching activities. Current generations of students are now arriving on campus with the expectation that their technologies will seamlessly interconnect with university services and support a flexible and personalised learning experience - engaging them in collaborative knowledge creation activities and developing their learning as producers of ‘content’ (Generation ‘C’). Drawing on the most recent sector-wide research (Jisc, 2017; UCISA 2018), this paper discusses the impact of these technological developments on academic practice – specifically the scope that learning technologies now present for innovation in the delivery of the taught curriculum.

Sofia - Professional on-line courses are the way to increase skills, competences and knowledge inside our marketplace workers and might be one of the key actions to promote an increase and engagement on the people interest in a new field, like Microelectronics, allowing them to adapt some more sustainable vision, greener electronics technology, and a more diverse, equity and much more better integration people in this workforce. Recent European Union actions like the Chip Act, as a coordinated answer to the shortage and dependence of the European Union on the foreign technology and microelectronics fabrication aggravated by the Ukrainian war put their outcomes from this project as a reference for future actions on technical VET inside the Europe Union. Early pilot results show that at this moment the students that are doing part of the pilot have less time that should be necessary to follow the curricula as well as probably they are not interested in all the activities and tasks of the pilot courses offered

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
