Work in Progress on the Standardization of Online Laboratories for
Education
ABSTRACT:
In the last years we have witness the increasing use of Online
Laboratories in education, encompassed by the development of
technology enhanced learning from k-12 to higher education. In this
context there is a need, on one hand to define and establish a
common consensus on the structure and operation of Online
laboratories (OL) that includes Remote Laboratories (RL) from
learning technologies perspective as open educational resources
(OER) independent from LMSs. On the other hand, cloud computing
and the concept of XaaS makes meaningful to consider laboratories
as another Lego™ piece of an educational resource in the cloud with
a focus on potential standardized information models and protocols
as a common basis for interoperability based on search, retrieval,
labeling and services for educational purposes.

Editor's Notes

  1. Thank you Prof. Manuel and this panel organizers for giving us the opportunity to share our Montreal Education Society Chapter Experience realized with the collaboration of the Education stakeholders including Educators, families and students (Pre-university, undergraduates and graduates) and Ministry of Education of Quebec officers.
  2. I am Hamadou Saliah-Hassane, Montreal IEEE Education Chapter Chair (2005 -2022). I think this will be my last year. My friend Rob Reilly gave me the advice to stick there until I find someone to take over the role.
  3. We also thank the section for their support, Mainly Dr Anader Benyamin, Past Chair and one of the most active IEEE Section Member here in Montreal. Under his leadership, our small group of members were ablle to start contributing to Montreal Education community efforts. We also Thank Dr Saida Maaroufi, encouraging and congratulating us for our achievement at our 2020 Gala Diner.
  4. We are not very numerous in number. But early on, we chose to partner with other IEEE societies and Organization Units and student branches to serve the community in support of education. IEEE Education Activity Board, through its TISP program has been our driving force.
  5. Some activities we carried on, are: Seminars from expert researchers, Workshops, Teacher trainings, Laboratories and Research Center Visits, Assisting universities in teams, as student final project evaluators, etc... As an example of a seminar, the one given in 2006 by Prof. Gilbert Paquette , an Emeritus Prof. at TELUQ University, was on "Modeling Languages for Instructional Engineering" In 2009, along with IEEE Education Activity Board we considered to partnership with them in the TISP Program: What we used to say to School Boards is that our members are engineers, scientists, physicists, and technologists who are interested in assisting their school boards to promote technical literacy and strengthen education in the areas of science, technology engineering and mathematics (STEM).    On October the 6th 2010, the Montréal TISP team organized the first Montreal TISP Workshop at École Polytechnique de Montréal in collaboration with its IEEE student branch. The goal of the workshop was to define a long term action plan and more specifically to establish a contact with local school boards. To this end, the list of invited attendees included representatives from Lester B Pearson School Board, Quebec Ministry of Education officers, school consultants, university professors and students.
  6. Another example of promoting STEM education is an event organized on March 24th 2011, where Geoffrey Alleyne, one of our EdSoc member, got the opportunity to give a presentation to two groups of science teachers at Beurling academy (http://beurling.lbpsb.qc.ca/). He explained the roles of engineers, technicians, and engineering technicians and what he is doing at PEC (Pearson Electrotechnology Centre). He also showed two short videos on a career in Electronics technology. He also explained a lab exercise that was about a regulated power supply circuit which he had assembled.
  7. We take advantage of the visits of experts to our research laboratories to organize seminars for our members and to the Montreal community.
  8. It was the case with the event we organized on November 19th, 2015, when Prof. Miguel Rodríguez Artacho from UNED, Spain, was visiting us. He was staying for a few months as part of his sabbatical year at the L@d of the TELUQ University. This event was a kind of Dislinguish Lecture Program activity. It was also part of our EdSoc Standard development activities.
  9. Here, in order for our members to plan a site visit activities for teachers and students, Geoffrey Alleyne, a Montreal TISP Champion, is presenting Lester B. Peason Electrotechnology Center called PEC facilities where he teaches telecommunication courses.
  10. Geoffrey, presented PEC's workshops on smart homes and its interesting Telecommunication museum .
  11. To name only a few, our Chapter members were also involved in the organization of the 2012 some conferences including ICELIE Conference held in the framework of the 60th Anniversary of IEEE Industrial Electronics Conference (IECON); My Colleague and friend Prof. Maarouf Saad, also member of EdSoc, was the other General Chair of the 2012 ICELIE Conference. We also took part of the organisation of the 2014 IHTC, and many other events organized by EdSoc sister societies here in Montreal.

  14. Motivating all stakeholders is one of the challenges to overcome. To this end, we award certificates to students, to educational institutions and their members, we send letters of introduction to indicate our willingness to assist them in implementing STEM programs required by the Quebec Ministry of Education. Teachers who accept to invite us receive certificates.
  15. Our Chapter’s Champions also receive Awards at our annual Gala Diners from Montreal Section Chairs. For example, Geoffrey Alleyne, as a collaborator of our Chapter activities and having participated in almost every event we organized in Montreal, was honored at the annual banquet of year 2015 by the Section with a mention of recognition “in growing the Teacher In Service Program”. Students are also awarded.
