Autonomy in language learning refers to learners' ability to self-direct their own learning by developing skills to know how to learn independently. Promoting autonomy in the classroom involves shifting from a teaching to a learning culture with new roles for teachers and students, explicitly representing students' learning strategies, and introducing self-directed learning resources. Benefits of autonomy include learners having more control over and commitment to their learning, acquiring strategies to learn outside class, increased self-confidence, and valuing their own work and achievements.
