The Australian zoogeographical region includes Australia, Tasmania, New Guinea, and some smaller islands. It is characterized by its isolation from other regions and unique endemic fauna. Many of its mammal families are found only in Australia, including marsupials that have radiated to fill ecological niches similar to placental mammals elsewhere. While its freshwater fish, amphibians, and reptiles are poor, its birds and mammals include many endemic families and genera that parallel fauna in other regions through convergent evolution.
