Robin Schiele
Welcome
My work is a result of many years of field observation of birds in Neotropical forests, studying and observing birds and
other fauna and its behavior, as well as spending plenty of time reviewing scientific collections, in order to achieve realistic
portraitures of the species; museum specimens are always consulted, and revised time and time again, so as to better
understand the subject. Live specimens of course have been used when possible, since life is full of surprises.
Life-size painting of the species details special features of plumage and natural coloring.
I hope you enjoy it, as well as I enjoy painting them!
Neotropical Birds & Wildlife
Robin Schiele, a Guatemalan born in Nicaragua, has a truly international education. Robin has
dedicated most of his life to the study and portraiture of endangered species of fauna in Central
and South American tropical forests. He has been involved with several conservationist organiza-
tions in the preservation of the natural resources of Guatemala and Colombia.
Robin’s watercolour collection features many endangered, endemic or rare birds from the
Neotropical forests, making a point of painting his subjects life-size focusing in the fine detail of
each species plumage and natural colouring. His singular technique uses watercolours with a
mixed dry-wet brush technique, giving his portraits a very special sharpness regarding colour,
that is difficult to achieve with watercolours. His work is clearly the result of thousands of hours
of painstaking study and examination of the creatures he paints, complemented with his large
experience watching birds and fauna in the field, looking the behaviour and movements of the
animals, making more realistic the final product.
Since 1996 to 2002 he worked for the Alexander von Humboldt Institute in Colombia, where
he made several collections of the Colombian fauna. Also in Colombia he worked with F. G. Stiles
as the illustrator of the book “Aves de la Sabana de Bogotá”, made by one of the main ornitho-
logical associations of Colombia “Asociación Bogotana de Ornitología, ABO”. Recently he illus-
trated a guide of birdwatching localities of Colombia and Guatemala and currently he is working
on produce a series of painting of birds in Nicaragua.
His exhibits are usually made as charities in which a percentage is donated to NGO’s dedicated
to conservation in the Neotropics.
