A funny thing happened when the internet took over – our customers became empowered. The right information is now at their fingertips if they want to get it. Mass Media advertising as we knew it is in decline. Scepticism reigns. Which means it is ever more important for us to build our Tribes. Do form our own communities. When presenting this slide, speak about LinkedIn as a “little black book” of contacts and connections. It is very favorable to have links to your website coming from your LinkedIn profile. It is regarded by the search engines and a very reputable source, so it does well to increase rankings. Also explain the last bullet, which refers to applications that accompany LinkedIn, such as BOX.Net for file storage and retrieval, TripIT for meeting contacts on the road and coordinating business ventures out of the store/office. Do mention LinkedIn’s ability to track the “vibe” or word on the street about a phrase or company using COMPANY BUZZ application.
So here’s a brief look at how this all fits together. Firstly you have all of these social networking sites – these are just a few of them, there are plenty more. You could boggle yourself by joining all of them, just do what you’re comfortable with to start. The best way to think about this is to imagine that these sites are exactly the same as when you go to a party. When you go to a party and meet new people, you don’t go around just talking about what you do or trying to sell them stuff (“hey, do you want to buy stuff from me?”) – you look like a tosser. Talk about stuff that is going on in your life, ask people questions, tell stories, entertain others. In this analogy, your BLOG is where you live, this is your home. If you meet someone cool at the party, you can invite them back here (“why don’t you drop by my house sometime?”). This is where you have all of your information, where you keep stuff that interests you. Now, when someone comes to your house, what do they normally expect to see? Pictures of you and your family, stuff you like, stuff you have. Do the same with your blog. Let people know what you like and what interests you. Talk about the things that you’re passionate about. Remember that when you invite people to your house, you offer them stuff – beer, wine, tea, dips, biscuits. Do the same thing here – provide interesting, informative CONTENT. Be friendly, contribute to other people’s stuff. BE LIKEABLE. Some people don’t care but those people know people, hundreds and thousands of people (it’s not called a ‘network’ for nothing!) and when they’re talking with someone who says “I’m about to start a new business and need to get my act together” they can then say “I met this great guy at a party and he’s really interesting and he can help you with that.”
