AUROVILLE!!!
THE CITY TO DAWN..
Auroville has the highest concentration of alternative and appropriate energy systems in India, including solar, wind and biogas generating systems. Of particular interest are the huge 15-metre diameter solar collector installed on the roof of the Solar Kitchen, designed to generate enough steam to cook over 2,000 meals a day, and the Matrimandir Solar Power Plant, believed to be the largest stand-alone system in India, comprising 484 photovoltaic modules with total capacity of 36.3 KW. Some 750 homes and/or offices operate entirely or mostly on solar power. See also “Wind energy generators”.
Auroville, City of dawn is located in state of Tamil Nadu, India, near Pondicherry in South India. .Auroville was founded as a project on experimental basis of the ‘Sri Arbindo Society’ on Wednesday 28 February 1968. The basic idea originated from Mirra Alfassa ‘The Mother ‘who was spiritually related to India.
Ma envisaged Auroville as an international township for 50,000 residents on the shape of a flower. Architect Roger Anger refined the planning and designed it in shape of Universe. He placed Matrimandir at the center of this city.
Mary Alfassa in her first message regarding the town stated that, "Auroville is meant to be a universal town where men and women of al countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities”

Sustainable technology and design in aurovillekunalsahu9883
The topic of sustainability is at the forefront of current international discussions. The rising importance placed on green practices has been prompted by the rapid depletion of natural resources, and the increased anthropogenic interference in the natural climatic balance. Private and public research institutions and bodies are continuously researching and working on innovative technologies and systems which are environmentally viable for the today’s society, and Auroville is a part of this pursuit for a sustainable future. The presentation deals with how the use of sustainable technology and design helps Auroville to have a better life. It shows the different technologies that are used in Auroville which serves as renewable resource, comparing the cost of Compressed Stabilised Earth Block (CSEB) with other types of blocks.

‘HARIYALI’: AS A MODEL TO COMBAT LAND DEGRADATIONMalhari Survase
The development of a region is primarily based on the efficient use and planned utilisation of
available resources, hence, it is necessary to use and conserve resources, particularly land, water,
soil and vegetation with utimost care for sustainable development. The exploitation and lavish use of
resources may threaten our life cycle causing land degradation at a greater scale. Various measures
are being adopted to conserve these resources by State and Central Government. “Hariyali”
(Greenary) project as community level efforts for the conservation of natural resource are introduced
by Department of Land Resources, Ministry of Rural Development, and Government of India from
April 2003. The present investigation aims to assess the nature, consisted works, carried works and
benefits achieved through Hariyali project implemented in western hilly part of Kolhapur district,
comprising seven small watersheds of Shahuwadi tahsil.
For the present investigation the required data and information has been collected from
Block Development Officer and Tahsil Agricultural Officer, Panchayat Samiti, Shahuwadi. The field
visits to confirm the ground reality have been arranged. The topomaps has been used to analyse
geographical situation such as location, watershed demarcation, topography, landforms, drainage,
forested areas and other landuse. The findings and results are represented through tables and maps.
The analysis revels that Hariyali project has achieved great success in conserving the land, soil,
water and vegetation. Hariyali project could be a ideal model for successfully combating the land
degradation, provided the sufficient funds are made available timely and local peoples participation
is made active.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

3. INTRODUCTION
• Auroville was founded as a project of the
Sri Aurobindo Society founded in 1968
by Mirra Alfassa(also known as "The
Mother")
• Designed by architect Roger Anger.
• As stated in Alfassa's first public message
about the township, "Auroville is meant
to be a universal town where men and
women of all countries are able to live in
peace and progressive harmony, above all
creeds, all politics and all nationalities.
The purpose of Auroville is to realize
human unity."
4. LOCATION
• Auroville is located in south India
,in the State of Tamil Nadu (some
parts are in the State of
Pondicherry), a few kilometers
inland from the Coromandel Coast,
approx 160kms south of Chennai
(previously Madras) and 10 kms
north of the town of Pondicherry.
5. AUROVILLIANS
People come from some 58 nations, from all age groups (from infancy to over eighty,
averaging around 30), from all social classes, backgrounds and cultures, representing
humanity as a whole. The population of the township is constantly growing, but
currently stands at around 2953 people, of whom approx one-third are Indian.
6.
7. CONCEPT
• The concept of Auroville - an ideal
township devoted to an experiment
in human unity.
• Between 1965 and 1967, the chief
architect of the project of Auroville,
Roger Anger, sequentially produced
four concepts for the city that the
Mother has envisioned; nebula,
rectilinear, macro structures modelled
on the ‘Yin-Yang’, and finally, what is
known as ‘the galaxy’ among the
resident population.
9. In the years 1999-2000, Auroville produced a master plan document to invite
the Government of India to recognize the project’s uniqueness and value,
‘Auroville Universal Township – master plan 2025’. This was presented to the
Ministry of Urban Development.
10.
11. ZONING AS PER LAND USE
PEACE AREA
• At the center of the township,
• Comprising the Matrimandir & its
gardens, the amphitheatre with the
Urn of Human Unity that contains
the soil of 121 nations and 23
Indian states.
• A lake to help create an atmosphere
of calm and serenity and to serve as
a groundwater recharge area.
12. ZONING AS PER LAND USE
INDUSTRIAL AREA
• A 126-hectare area to the north of
the Peace Area.
• The Industrial Zone, a zone for
"green“ industries, is focused on
Auroville's efforts towards a self-
supporting township.
• It will contain small and medium
scale industries, training centers,
arts and crafts, and the city's
administration.
13. ZONING AS PER LAND USE
RESIDENTIAL AREA
• The largest of the four city zones.
• Comprising of 173 hectares.
• The Residential Zone is bordered
by parks on the north, south and
west.
14. ZONING AS PER LAND USE
CULTURAL AREA
• Planned on a 96-hectare area, situated to the east
of the Peace Area,
• The Cultural Zone will be a site for applied
research in education and artistic expression.
• Facilities for cultural, educational, art and sports
activities will be located in this zone.
GREEN BELT
• Green Belt of 1.25 km width.
• Zone for organic farms, dairies, orchards, forests.
• Wildlife areas, this belt will act as a barrier against
urban encroachment,
• Provide a variety of habitats for wildlife.
• Serve as a source for food, timber, medicines etc.
and as a place for recreation..
15. ZONING AS PER LAND USE
• A zone of 68 hectares to the west of
the Peace Area,
• host national and cultural
pavilions, grouped by continents.
INTERNATIONAL AREA
22. Auroville city area - Land Suitability and Land Use Proposal
April -May 2014
23. • From the mid-1980s, while digging for tree
planting, foundations for structures and
infrastructure laying, people have been
unearthing evidence of settlements of
archaeological importance.
• Mapping these points and correlating
them has given us the rough extent of
archaeological sites.
• These have also been indicated in the
master plan document 2025.
• Two historical periods have been
identified from the 25 rescue excavations
carried out to date by the AMA
(Archaeological Museum of Auroville) over
the last 35 years.
ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE
24. • There are three villages (Ediyanchavadi,
Kottakarai/Bharatipuram & Allankuppam) that lie
within and overlapping the limits of the Auroville
city area.
• The villages of Ediyanchavadi and
Kottakarai/Bharatipuram fall within the Vanur block
of Villupuram district in the state of Tamil Nadu,
while the village of Allankuppam is part of the
union territory of Puducherry.
• Comparative figures show that the decadal
population growth in Villupuram district has
jumped from 7.43% from 1991-2001 to 16.99%
from 2001-11, which is a considerable increase.
• The village of Ediyanchavadi has a population of
2,760 persons with a settlement area of 52 acres
(14.5 person/acre) and the village of
Kottakarai/Bharatipuram has 1,400 persons on an
area of 62.5 acres (2.24 persons/acre).
• The Puducherry village of Allankuppam has about
2,000 persons on 14.3 acres (139 persons/acre).
Villages adjacent and within the city
25. • The extensive afforestation in the
township area has reduced the floods
along the main drainage channel that
drains to the west and south of
Puducherry, decreased siltation in the
local ponds on the inland side, and
minimized the creeping growth of the
canyons, while bringing change in the
microclimate of the local area.
• The species diversity of the afforestation
has changed from a preference for exotic
plants in the 1970s and ‘80s to the
systematic planting of indigenous species.

28. RESIDENTIAL LAND
• Of the 1,212 acres that constitute the city area of
Auroville, the Residential Zone is about 533
acres or 44%, with 280 acres that are directly
under residential development and about 253
as roads, green areas and civic amenities.
29.
30. RESIDENTIAL LAND- ISSUES
1. High water percolation areas in the residential zone.
2. Outer ring road is located on a fragile point of
convergence of the extracted flow area; the road will
increase erosion as it will act as a water flow collector
channel.
3. The radial between sectors 4 & 5,is wrongly placed in
relation to the surface waterflow, existing forests and
the head of the canyon of Aurodam. This radial
should be shifted or even
4. The radial between sector 5 and the park that buffers
the International Zone is not only located over an
ecologically sensitive area but also denies the
residents of this urban area an opportunity to access a
natural land feature that could enhance their quality
of life.
31. RESIDENTIAL LAND- SOLUTIONS
1- Allow the boundary between the urban areas and
the green belt to integrate the natural features of the
land and existing land use.
2- Reposition the radials at the edges of the
Residential Zone so they become an internal
distributor for sectors 1 and 5.
3- Move, truncate and/or limit the radials that are
presently positioned on ecologically sensitive areas.
4- Re-evaluate the need for an outer ring road in
sectors 1 & 2, and change its function from being a
collector-feeder to a feeder-distributor road.
5- Accept the panchayat road as the outer ring road
and work on the type of development that could be
located along this road that would be mutually
beneficial to the villages and Auroville, creating a co-
development zone.
32. INTERNATIONAL LAND
• Of the 1,212 acres that constitute the city
area of Auroville, the International Zone is
about 150 acres or 12.3%, with 37.15 acres
already settled, along with 4.25 acres that
are in seasonal waterbodies as they are
low-lying.
33. INTERNATIONAL LAND- ISSUES
1. Require extensive barriers to prevent spillover of
the external tourist/service traffic into the
Residential Zone and the green area.
2. Low laying area
3. The land along the periphery of the International
Zone, including the lands between the master
plan 2025 outer ring road and the panchayat
road, is low-lying with a high water table
4. This is the edge of the International Zone with a
radial marking it. The issue here is the existence
of the village of Bharatipuram, populated by
people squatting on peromboke lands without
ownership documents. This radial will invite
further squatting.

2
34. INTERNATIONAL LAND- SOLUTIONS
1. Avoid having the entry to the International Zone via sector
5 of the Residential Zone and integrate the forested area of
Aurodam, which can be developed as a protected urban
forestwithout bypass traffic.
2. Use the present access from the panchayat road as the main
access with a distribution ring that connects to the crown to
limit the movement of the visitors within the zone, while
providing access to the various projects from this ring via
spokes that are dead ends.
3. Zone the lands that lie alongside as low-impact
development with designated locations for
waterbodies/mixed forests to improve water percolation
and landscaping by urban agriculture, including
pasturelands and cows to build up soil fertility.
4. Ideally, the land use of the plots around the village should
be mixed use with institutional/residential/educational,
consisting of vocational training/student and volunteer
housing and small-scale manufacturing to have higher
population density that would build a symbiotic
relationship with the village.

35. INDUSTRIAL LAND
• Of the 1,212 acres that constitute the city
area of Auroville, the Industrial Zone is
about 251 acres or 20.70%, with 38.14 acres
as canyons, forests and seasonal
waterbodies as they are low-lying.
36. ADMINISTRATION LAND
• Of the 1,212 acres that constitute the city
area of Auroville, the administrative cum
habitat zone is about 45 acres or 0.03%,
with 20+ acres already developed with
four office buildings and the rest as
habitat.
37. CULTURAL LAND
• Of the 1,212 acres that constitute the city
area of Auroville, the Cultural Zone, with
its outshooting strip of the educational
area, is about 246 acres or 20.29%, with
12.1 acres under forest cover, which is
mostly connected to the forested areas of
Fertile, Two Banyans and Samridhi
