Here are a few suggestions to improve the script:- Add more description of sounds/noises to build atmosphere and tension (rustling leaves, creaking branches, heavy breathing, etc.)- Have the friend describe the creature in more disturbing/unsettling detail to ramp up fear and mystery - Consider having the friend call out for help at some point to add another layer of desperation- Build up the creature's movements - does it start to slowly approach? Crouch down? Make sudden jerky motions?- Have the friend struggle with the car door to show rising panic/fear impeding escape - End on an unresolved cliffhanger note rather than wrapping everything up to leave
This document provides resources and examples for an audio drama project, including existing audio dramas and podcasts to research, as well as suggestions for conducting experiments with sound effects and recording. It discusses researching 3 existing products and analyzing their use of sound effects, music, location/time period setting, and tone. Links and screenshots of experiments with sound effect creation and the audio editing software GarageBand are also included.

3. Existing Products Research
• Cry Reads: I’m a 911 operator
– The story is of a phone call conversation, and to
make this show in the audio, it begins with a
phone dialling. Throughout the story the audio
quality is grainy and there is background noise like
a real phonecall would. Sound effects add to the
drama at the ending, as loud bashing is heard and
the phone call ends with beeping. The usage of
sound effects is minimal, but effective in making
the listener scared.
4. • Go over as many slides as necessary. Research at least 3 products.
• Discuss the use of sound effects, music and. How have the
producers suggested a location/time period and created a tone/feel
• Try to break down what you can hear. How do theperformance
different sound elements work together? How do sound effects add
to the drama? What part does music play in the work?
• Try to listen to a variety of different types of radio programme. If
you listen to drama and documentary, you will give yourself a better
understanding of what exists and what is possible. It will also help
guide your project.
5. Existing Products Research
• BBC Yorkshire Ripper Radio Documentary
– As the audio is a documentary, there is no sound
effects. The content is an explanation of the
yorkshire ripper story, featuring eyewitness
accounts and interviews of people involved.
6. Existing Products Research
• TLPOTL: EPISODE 165 – ED KEMPER
– This podcast is an informal discussion about true
crime, particularly Edmund Kemper. The hosts are
lighthearted and joke around, despite talking
about such a dark topic. The only sound effect
used is the introduction jingle.
10. Story
• Provide a brief summary of the story/stories
you have chosen
• 1. A short story of a phone call between a 911
operator and a man who sees someone
outside his house at night.
• 2. Audio documentary detailing the events of
the Yorkshire Ripper murders
• 3. A casual podcast discussing Ed Kemper and
the Co-Ed killings.
11. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
• My initial thoughts were to create a horror story
told through a phonecall. A positive about this
idea would be easy to record. A difficulty is that I
would be limited in the ability to tell a story as it
has to be between two people talking.
• Another idea is narrating a ghost story utilizing
sound effects and ambience to create an
atmosphere.
12. • Log your initial thoughts regarding the set brief-
What stories could you use? How do you feel
about the different potential formats? What are
the positives about this project? What could be
some difficult aspects?
• My initial thoughts were to create a thriller story.
I had a few ideas on themes for a thriller story,
such as a phone call, or a ghost story.
• Create a mind map of all the things you need to
think about for your project.
13. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
• Phone call horror story idea
• - The narrator receives a strange phonecall from
a friend late at night
• Sound effects used are dial tones, background
static, beeping for the end of the call. This is to
build the atmosphere that it’s a phonecall
conversation.
• The story will end with a cliffhanger.
• The friend is hearing strange noises at night, as
the call progresses things escalate.
14. Proposal
Working Title:
Phone call thriller
Audience:
Who is your audience? Be very detailed; age, gender, social status, psychographic etc. Use the
Audience Classifications PowerPoint on Blackboard to help you develop this section.
Why would your project appeal to this person? Discuss each audience element in relation to
content (why would your product appeal to the age group? Why would your product appeal to
the gender? Etc.)
My audience is young adults and teenagers
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
What is the concept for your project and what are you going to make?
What did you learning during research that will help you?
The concept for my project is a thriller story told through a phone call.

• You should include a link and a screen shot.
Don’t embed your work, it won’t work.
17. Recording
• Write about your experiences of recording in
different places.
– I found that recording outside was difficult as
there was a lot of wind on that day.
• What effect did it have? How will this
influence your project?
– The effect this had is that a lot of the wind picked
up on the recording, making it a lower quality .
18. Garage Band
• Include your work with Garage Band, and
some writing about what went well, what
could be better and what you have learned.
• You should include a link and a screen shot.

• > vague shape is seen in the trees
• > friend becomes panicked
• > friend turns on flashlight to see what is in the trees

21. Script Final
• Narrator: I’ve been too scared to talk to anyone about this but… Last week my friend went missing and the last phone call we had makes me really worried for his
safety
• - Dial tone, phone is picked up
• Narrator: Hello?
• Friend: Hey man
• Narrator: What’s up? I was about to go to sleep, it’s like 1am.
• Friend: I messed up. I messed up reaaaal bad. I need help and I don’t know what to do.
• Narrator, sounding worried: What happened.. Are you okay?
• Friend: No. I was driving home because I had to work late tonight, and the road I usually drive home on is closed for maintenance so I have to drive through these
bumpy and awful country roads. I think I ran over some sort of animal and now my god damn car broke down. I have no idea what the animal is though..
• Narrator: Shouldn’t you have called the police? Or a rescue service?
• Friend: That’s the thing. I have no idea what this Thing is. It looks vaguelly humanoid and god.. What if I ran over some poor homeless guy or something? It’s so hard
to tell.
• Narrator: What does it look like?
• Friend: I don’t know. It’s all mangled up. I have no idea how my car managed to do this. And god, it stinks so bad.
• Narrator: Dude. You should really call the police. I’m sure you won’t get in trouble.
• Friend: I know but even if it’s some animal, my car is still screwed. I called you because I know you have experience with cars and I was wondering if you could help
me figure out how to get it starting again.
• Narrator, sighing: alright dude, but don’t blame me when you’re stranded. Pop the hood and tell me what you see.
• Friend, shuffling around: Got it.
• Friend: Everything looks fine I think..
• Narrator: Are you sure?
• Friend: Yeah.. God this is so weird. Maybe a tire is flat or something. I have a torch in the trunk. I’ll go grab that.
• Shuffling Around Noises, trunk opens and closes
• Friend: Alright I got the- PAUSE – What the- What the hell was that
• Narrator: What? Everything okay?
• Friend: I thought I heard something over in the trees. Probably a squirrel or something I guess. It’s so foggy and dark it’s really starting to make me feel on edge.
• Narrator: Just call the cops already, man. They can help you.
• Friend. Sounding frustrated: I can- I can do this myself.
• Narrator: Okay..
• Friend: I just want to get this damned car running and go home.

28. Daily Reflection Day 1
• For my first day of production I began by
collecting sound effects. I found that it was
difficult to find some sound effects, such as
sounds for gore.
33. Research
• A strength of my research is that it gave me insight into how audio dramas
are made. I found out how sound effects are made and different
techniques that are used in audio dramas.
34. Planning
• A strength of my planning is that I planned out each day of production so I
knew what to do. I also planned out the assets id need, such as sound
effects and music. I also planned what kit I needed, like microphones and
sd cards.
• A weakness of my planning is that I didn’t consider sudden changes that
would interfere with my day-to-day plan. This meant that if I missed a day
of production, my entire schedule would have been thrown off. This in
consequence affected my time management. To improve, I would have
taken this into account and made my schedule more flexible.
35. Time Management
• I did not manage my time well. I completed my project late as I had
problems with recording audio. If I had additional time I may have been
able to improve my project, by creating better sound effects.
36. Technical Qualities
Compared to existing products, my product is
lower quality. The audio was recorded with a lower
quality microphone than most professional audio
dramas.
37. Aural Qualities
I think that my work is creative, and I like the usage
of sound effects.
To improve my work, I would have used a better quality
microphone and used better voice acting. This would
increase the overall quality of the work and the improved
voice acting would tell the story better.
A weakness of my work is the voice acting. It came off very flat and
unemotional.
A strength of my work is that
38. Audience Appeal
I think my product appealed to the target
audience. My product was horror themed which
appealed to my audience.
