HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR
AUDIENCE?
BY SHANNON JONES
SCREENING AUDIENCE; WHAT DID THEY THINK OF IT?
After screening the opening to our film to our class, who consist of ages
between 16-18, we asked them for feedback on how to improve it, if they liked it
and what level they would grade it. The initial reaction to our clip was fairly
positive. They all said that they enjoyed the video and would want to continue
watching the film, meaning that the first two minutes attracted their attention and
encouraged them to continue watching.
FEEDBACK FROM AUDIENCE-WHAT DID THEY LIKE?
We found that the flashbacks were the main feature that kept the audience
interested as they said that they found them interesting and the voiceover
creepy, making it a good thriller film. After researching different films and their
target audiences we knew what would appeal most to our target audience and
the flashbacks were definitely an element in the film Memento that kept the
audience attracted. The audience's feedback that the flashbacks created
suspense, especially the bus stop scene, which kept them increasingly
interested in the film.
THE ACTRESS, EFFECTS AND SOUND
 Research also showed that crime thriller is appealing to most audiences aged 15-19 which is
what our target audience included. The screening consisted of an audience within this age
range and therefore they were interested in our film. We also found that males were more
likely to watch this film then females and this might be because the female role is an attractive
blonde woman which, after asking males what would appeal to them in a film, might be a
contributing factor to why the film kept the male audience interested.
 The film uses after effects efficiently which will make the clip visually entertaining to the
audience and would attract their attention. The music composed creates the tension and
suspense that will encourage the audience to keep watching and will making the film more
'thrilling'.
CLIFF-HANGERS
Another aspect that attracted the audience, would've been that the clip ended
on a cliff-hanger and therefore the audience would've wanted to continue to
watch it to find out what happens to them. Many unanswered questions are left
for the audience. Why had he taken her? Who is the male at the end? Will he
save her? What will he do to her?
CONFUSING CHARACTER?
However, a member of the audience also said that they didn't understand the role of the older
male at the end, she didn't understand that he was the police detective who would be looking
into the case and trying to save the female. This could either keep the audience interested in the
film to see if they will be able to figure out what the narrative is about and what will happen, or it
could make the audience give up on watching the film as they might not be willing to find out
more if they don't already understand it. This is one improvement that we could make to the film;
to make the detectives character more clear maybe through mise-en scene. We found a long
raincoat for the detective to wear to show the stereotypical clothing of a detective in thriller
films, however in my opinion, the raincoat doesn't clearly show this and looks more like a
dressing gown which, understandably, would confuse the audience. The last scene zooms into
his metropolitan police badge but the camera quality isn't as good as what I would've wanted.
This means that, when this character was introduced, the audience began to become confused
which may have a negative impact on the viewing of the film.
ALTOGETHER…
Altogether we managed to attract an audience to our film by creating a thrilling
narrative with good characters and including good effects and sound.
