About ATMEGA 328
Atmega328 is the micro controller used on
Arduino boards.
• Specs
• 28-pin AVR Microcontroller
• Flash Program Memory: 32 kbytes
• EEPROM Data Memory: 1 kbytes
• SRAM Data Memory: 2 kbytes
• I/O Pins: 23
• Timers: Two 8-bit / One 16-bit
• A/D Converter: 10-bit Six Channel
• PWM: Six Channels
• RTC: Yes with Separate Oscillator
• MSSP: SPI and I²C Master and Slave Support
• USART: Yes
• External Oscillator: up to 20MHz
Atmega 328 pinout
What is Arduino Bootloader
• The Bootloader is the program that runs when you power
on the Atmega controller.
• It waits for the Arduino software on your computer to send
it a new program, which it then writes to the flash memory
on the Atmega controller.
• Normally, we need to use special device (ISP programmer)
to program the Atmega chip using the SPI programming
interface. Bootloader allows us to program the Atmega
chip using the Arduino software and the USB cable.
• The Bootloader is written to the Boot Flash section as
described below.
Burning the Bootloader
• Pre-requisite setup
• Upload ArduinoISP sketch on the Arduino Uno board, this
will turn Arduino board into an ISP programmer
• Select “Arduino as ISP” from the Tools->Programmer menu.
• Collect Components
• 1 16 Mhz Crystal
• 1 10K resistor
• 2 22pf capacitors
• Arduino Uno board
Breadboard Connections
• Connect X1 and X2 to crystal
• Connect 22PF capacitors to the two ends
of crystal and other ends to ground.
• Connect RESET to VCC via 10K resistor
as pull up resistor.
• Connect PIN 10 of the Arduino board to
RESET pin of ATMEGA.
• Connect pin 11,12,13 of the Arduino to the
ATMEGA 11,12,13(MOSI, MISO, SCK)
pins. You can also connect these pins
from ICSP header specially if not using
Arduino Uno.
• Connect 5V and GND pins to the
Breadboard 5V and GND.

4. MOSI

Burn it!!
• Select "Arduino Duemilanove or Nano
and Processor as Atmega328 from the
Tools > Board menu.
• Run Tools > Burn Bootloader
• If there are any failures re-check the
connections. If all goes well Arduino IDE
will show a successful message.

What is Arduino Bootloader • The Bootloader is the program that runs when you power on the Atmega controller. • It waits for the Arduino software on your computer to send it a new program, which it then writes to the flash memory on the Atmega controller. • Normally, we need to use special device (ISP programmer) to program the Atmega chip using the SPI programming interface. Bootloader allows us to program the Atmega chip using the Arduino software and the USB cable. • The Bootloader is written to the Boot Flash section as described below.

Burning the Bootloader • Pre-requisite setup • Upload ArduinoISP sketch on the Arduino Uno board, this will turn Arduino board into an ISP programmer • Select “Arduino as ISP” from the Tools->Programmer menu. • Collect Components • 1 16 Mhz Crystal • 1 10K resistor • 2 22pf capacitors • Arduino Uno board

Breadboard Connections • Connect X1 and X2 to crystal • Connect 22PF capacitors to the two ends of crystal and other ends to ground. • Connect RESET to VCC via 10K resistor as pull up resistor. • Connect PIN 10 of the Arduino board to RESET pin of ATMEGA. • Connect pin 11,12,13 of the Arduino to the ATMEGA 11,12,13(MOSI, MISO, SCK) pins. You can also connect these pins from ICSP header specially if not using Arduino Uno. • Connect 5V and GND pins to the Breadboard 5V and GND. 1. MISO 3. SCK 5. RESET 2. VCC 4. MOSI 6. GND
  • 7. Burn it!! • Select "Arduino Duemilanove or Nano and Processor as Atmega328 from the Tools > Board menu. • Run Tools > Burn Bootloader • If there are any failures re-check the connections. If all goes well Arduino IDE will show a successful message.
