2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

1. Assure Method
Monday
A- I am going to be teaching 2D and 3D shapes to a class of kindergarteners between the
ages of 5 and 6, I plan on teaching this lesson in a rural area with a mix of boys and girls
in the classroom. I realize that I cannot just stand at the board and lecture because these
are small children that learn by hands on interaction. I need to also teach by making the
students participate in as much as possible.
S- Through activities, videos, and online class research 100% of my class will learn the
definitions of 2D and 3D shapes by the end of the day on Monday.
S- In order to teach this class of kindergarteners the definition of 2D and 3D shapes I am
going to need a SmartBoard because I want to pull up on the board and show them a
website that explains the definition of 2D and 3D shapes. Then I want to pull up
YouTube and have them watch a video that explains the definition of 2D and 3D shapes.
After that I am going to split them up into groups and I am going to give them an activity
that they have to complete about the differences in the definitions of 2D and 3D shapes.
U- The students will first come in and I will have the website pulled up on the
SmartBoard. I will go over the definition and ask questions throughout making sure my
students are involved. Next I will pull up the YouTube video pausing it every now and
then to ask questions to make sure my students are paying attention. Then I am going to
split my students up into groups they are going to participate in a hands on activity and
know how to correctly identify the difference in definition between the two. I will pass
out a sheet of paper to each student on the paper they will have the definitions of a 2D
and a 3D shape they will also have three 2D shapes on the paper and three 3D shapes on
the paper. Then have to cut it out everything on the paper and match them up correctly. I
will then come around and either correct the student if they need help or congratulate
them if they are correct.
R- My learners will participate by doing a class activity, learning the definitions through
a website, and participating in watching a YouTube video.
E- I will evaluate my material that I use often by making changes as needed and assessing
my students along the way by asking each one of them questions about the material to see
what they understand.
