Assistive Technology
for Students with
Special Needs

When working with special needs students , it is
important to remember that each individual
student has a set of strengths and weaknesses that
should be addressed.

In order for each student to receive
proper instruction the teacher may utilize
specific technologies that cater to certain
disabilities that a student has.
Examples of Assistive Technologies…
For students with attention disorders, such as ADHD,
assistive technology that includes audiovisuals, such as
using an overhead projector, can help the student focus on
the assignment at hand.
Another option would be to allow the student to
complete their work on a computer ”which makes
instruction more visual and allows students to participate
actively”.

Students with visual impairments can require assistance
that can vary depending on the severity of the impairment.
Tools such as Braille embossers, refreshable Braille displays,
and magnifiers (available at vendors such as
http://www.microsoft.com/enable/at/types.aspx ), create a
way for the student to read using the Braille system if they
are legally blind or to magnify the content to the
appropriate readable size.

For students that struggle to learn due to motor skills may
require special tools that compensate for the lack of proper
usage of hands and other parts of the body.
An example from www.edutopia.org is a student with
cerebral palsy who uses red and green lights in a game of
Red Light-Green Light.
A more academic use would be a student who a pointer
device or joystick to manipulate a computer program or
device that would make writing and communication more
simple.
This is by no means a complete set of resources . For a
teacher to cater to a group of special needs students, he or she
must first learn about available sources for students
depending on their individual needs.

  • 2. When working with special needs students , it is important to remember that each individual student has a set of strengths and weaknesses that should be addressed. In order for each student to receive proper instruction the teacher may utilize specific technologies that cater to certain disabilities that a student has.

Examples of Assistive Technologies… For students with attention disorders, such as ADHD, assistive technology that includes audiovisuals, such as using an overhead projector, can help the student focus on the assignment at hand. Another option would be to allow the student to complete their work on a computer ”which makes instruction more visual and allows students to participate actively”. Tools such as Braille embossers, refreshable Braille displays, and magnifiers (available at vendors such as http://www.microsoft.com/enable/at/types.aspx ), create a way for the student to read using the Braille system if they are legally blind or to magnify the content to the appropriate readable size.
  • 5. …continued…. For students that struggle to learn due to motor skills may require special tools that compensate for the lack of proper usage of hands and other parts of the body. An example from www.edutopia.org is a student with cerebral palsy who uses red and green lights in a game of Red Light-Green Light. A more academic use would be a student who a pointer device or joystick to manipulate a computer program or device that would make writing and communication more simple.
