Assistive technology includes any item that helps students with disabilities meet their educational goals. This includes software, devices, and materials outlined in a student's IEP. The Assistive Technology Act of 2004 requires states to provide access to assistive technologies through programs like device loans. Examples of assistive technologies described for different disabilities include hearing assistive devices, materials for visually impaired students like braille and large print, tools for learning disabilities like audio books, and adaptive equipment for physical disabilities.

2. Assistive Technology is any software,
device, or item used to help a student
with a disability to meet the goals in his
or her IEP, individual education plan. This
allows the student to improve functional
capabilities in the classroom setting
and all aspects of life.

3. ASSISTIVE
TECHNOLOGY ACT OF
2004
THIS ACT REQUIRES THE STATE TO PROVIDE
ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY NEEDED FOR
INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES. THIS DIRECT AID
INCLUDES ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY REUTILIZATION
PROGRAMS , DEMONSTRATION PROGRAMS ,
ALTERNATIVE FINANCING AND DEVICE LOAN
PROGRAMS.

4. HEARING
IMPAIRED
PERSONAL AMPLIFIERS ARE
USEFUL DEVICES THAT ARE
ABOUT THE SIZE OF A CELL
PHONE. IT REDUCES BACKGROUND
NOISE AND INCREASES THE
SOUND LEVELS INTO A HEADSET
OR EARBUDS.
Hearing Loop (or induction loop) System include
an amplifier, a good sound source, wire that
surrounds the area and a receiver headset or ear
buds. The sound is transmitted by
electromagnetic energy. FM Systems amplify sounds by transmitting
radio signals. This is most often used in the
classroom where the teacher wears a small
microphone and the students wears a
receiver.
Infrared Systems transmit sound by using
infrared light. Sound is converted into a
light signal that beams to the receiver worn
by a listener.

5. SEEING
IMPAIRED
LARGE PRINT BOOKS HAVE LARGE LETTERS TO
ALLOW STUDENTS WITH MINIMAL VISION TO SEE
THE WORDS AND PICTURES.
Braille Textbooks have
raised letters that when
combined create words. This
allows students with vision
impairments to fell the words
and read along.
Talking Calculators
have large numbers
illustrated and talk to
the students as they
make their
calculations.
Screen Reader and
Talking Browsers
allow the students to
communicate with the
electronic device.

USED TO CREATE
STORIES TO TELL ALOUD
AND HELP STUDENTS
ORGANIZE THEIR
THOUGHTS AND TELL A
STORY IN SEQUENTIAL
ORDER.

students with severe disabilities to communicate with people and
