Universal Design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people without the need for adaptation. It involves identifying the intended users, defining accessibility guidelines, involving consumers, planning for accommodations, and evaluating the design. The principles of Universal Design include equitable use, flexibility, simple and intuitive use, perceptible information, tolerance for error, low physical effort, and appropriate size and space. Universal Design for Learning applies these principles to curriculum design to ensure students with diverse needs and abilities can access information through multiple formats and have ways to express what they've learned. It provides flexibility in representation, action and expression, and engagement.
