Universal Design Principles
1. Equitable Use: can be applied to different types of people
2. Flexibility In Use: can accommodate a wide range of individual abilities
3. Simple & Intuitive: universally easy to understand
4. Perceptible Information: information is communicated effectively & efficiently
5. Tolerance For Error: minimizes hazards & unwanted consequences
6. Low Physical Effort: efficient & comfortable for a wide variety of people
7. Size & Space For Approach & Use: appropriate size & shape is provided, regardless of the user’s
physical characteristics

 Specify the environment

2. Define the universe

Universal Design Process

 Describe overall characteristics of population

3. Involve consumers
 Involve people with diverse characteristics

4. Adopt guidelines/standards
 Create universal design guidelines

5. Apply guidelines/standards
 Apply universal design

6. Plan for accommodations
 Develop processes to address accommodation requests

7. Train & support
 Deliver ongoing training & support

8. Evaluate
 Evaluate application & make modifications based on
feedback
UD in the Classroom
 There is a great diversity of learners in the
classroom
 Make lessons more hands-on &
interactive
 Identify possible barriers for certain
students ahead of time
 Teachers can implement creativity in the
classroom

 Everyone is affected, not just individual
students
 All students can be on the same page
