Universal Design (UD) is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people without the need for adaptation. The process of UD involves identifying the environment to apply UD principles, defining the target population, involving consumers from diverse backgrounds, establishing standards, applying the standards, developing plans to accommodate individuals who do not fit specific standards, offering training, and evaluating the application. UD can be applied to any product or environment like curriculum, computer labs, worksites, and web pages to accommodate people with a variety of characteristics and maximize learning for students with diverse backgrounds.
