What is Universal Design
• The design of products and environments to
be usable by all people with a variety of
learning styles
• To be used without the need for adaptation
Process of Universal Design
• Identify the application- select the environment to
apply UD
• Define the universe- identify overall population
• Involve Consumers- get people with diverse
backgrounds
• Adopt standards- establish standards
• Apply standards- apply these standards
• Plan- develop plan to accommodate requests from
individuals who do not fit the specific
• Train and support- offer training to participants
• Evaluate- evaluate the application
Applying UD
• UD can be applied to any product or
environment, such as curriculum, instruction,
career services offices, multimedia, tutoring
and learning centers, conference exhibits,
museums, microwave ovens, computer labs,
worksites, and web pages.
UD in Education
• Students come with a variety of racial and
ethnic backgrounds
• A lot of times students do not come from
English speaking homes
• In order to apply UD principals, their products
must accommodate people with a variety of
characteristics
Goal of UD
• The goal of UDI is to maximize the learning of
students with a wide range of characteristics
