This document provides information about the genus Aspergillus. It was first catalogued in 1729 by Pier Antonio Micheli, who observed fungi under a microscope and named the genus based on its resemblance to an aspergillum. Aspergillus reproduces asexually through spore-forming structures and about one-third of species also have a sexual stage. They are defined as conidial fungi in an asexual state and some have been proven to have a sexual teleomorph state. Aspergillus species can grow in a variety of oxygen-rich environments and substrates, making them common contaminants of foods and plants.
