Boiler explosions were quite common. • By the early 1900’s, in the US, over 50,000 dead and 2,000,000 were severely injured due to explosions. • 1880 - thirty (30) mechanical engineers formed a society to advance the interest of the Mechanical Engineering Discipline.

- 10. 1010 Overview of ASMECodes – ASME establishes rules for new construction of pressure vessels that will perform in a safe & reliable manner. – ASME also interprets these rules when questions arise regarding their intent – Code does not address all aspects and those not addressed should not be considered prohibited. – Code does not fully address tolerances. – Code is not a design handbook, designer must use engineering judgement consistent with Code philosophy which do not overrule mandatory requirements of the Code.

- 23. 2323 Ongoing Vessel Inspections •After the shop is certified, each Code item must be inspected by AI as specified in the respective ASME Code • ASME Certificate is valid for 3 years • After every 3 years, renewal audit is must • Every year the AIS conducts audit • The AIA of Record must be used for all inspections except when the AIA cannot provide coverage at field site • The manufacturer may change AIA of Record
- 24. 2424 Cost to theManufacturer • Review advance Deposit towards auditor travel & other expenses: US$ 11,000 • ASME Certificate fee except ‘H’ (in advance): US$ 3,315 • ‘Certification Mark’ hard stamp (one time cost, in advance): US$335 • Each additional manufacturing location if applicable: US$6,000 • Code Books price shall as per scope; approx. US$4,500 • Other Codes (e.g. B16.5, 16.9, 16.11, 16.20, 36.10, NBIC Part 1, 2 & 3, SNT-TC-1A) US$1,016 • AIA Fees • Cost for manufacturing demo vessel (You may consider cost for a simple vessel e.g. CS, 600mm dia, 8-10 mm thk with 4-5 nozzles) • Subcontractor costs as necessary e.g. design, NDT
