- This talk will address the significant promotional and support issues for academic libraries in the diverse landscape of reference management software, with particular reference to web and mobile applications that can be used by researchers "on the move". The use of reference management software to capture and organise citations is increasingly a common part of undergraduate student experience as well as that of postgraduates and researchers. However, the wide range of software options, both subscription and open source, as well as the opportunity to store references "in the cloud" and access them on handheld devices is a challenge for researchers, students and librarians alike. Nevertheless, in the context of diminishing academic library budgets, such software remains a valuable tool to maximise access to holdings as well as assist in identifying additional research resources. Library staff and research managers are therefore encouraged to embrace the range of software options, storage in the cloud, and the rise of "expert users" of non (University) standard software as significant opportunities.
