America attempting to improve residents’ quality of life and overall well-being. Social
capital, defined as “ the social networks and the norms of trustworthiness and reciprocity

In preparation for the final project in this course where you will write a grant proposal with an accompanying presentation, you will need to develop a clear understanding of the community you seek to serve with your project. In this assignment, you will construct a specific service project that meets the needs of the particular community it engages. Use a variety of sources to establish a preliminary picture of the community in order to gauge the concerns of actual members within the community itself.
Do the following:
Compile research from both scholarly as well as local sources such as newspaper articles, interviews, town-meeting notes, etc., to develop a “big picture” of the community.
Conduct research, including interviews, questionnaires, and surveys, in the field to supplement this information if such information will help in further developing your understanding of the community.
Here are some topics to help guide your research:

When was the community started?
Why was it started?
What has been the main economic base for the community? Has it changed since its founding? If so, how has this affected the community?
What about the history of minority groups in the area?
People:
Who are the important people (elected officials, church leaders, community leaders, etc.)?
Who works with these individuals to support their efforts (community organizations, churches, non-profit organizations, local governments, etc.)?
Groups:
What are the various groups within the community (geographic, social, racial, ethnic, etc.)?
Who represents the interests of each? Are there any particular organizations that serve particular groups?
How do these groups interact with one another? Are there groups that tend to work together or at cross-purposes? If so, identify how and why such relationships develop.
Are there any particular groups that undertake work of a similar nature as your proposed project?

Introduction
In many communities across the country, it
is not uncommon for local leaders and citi-
zens to assemble together to try to make their
community an even better place in which to
live. Unfortunately, the beginning point for
these discussions usually is focused on the var-
ious problems and concerns existing in the
community. In some cases, these community
groups seek the advice of friends and neigh-
bors as to what they feel are the major prob-
lems. In other instances, elaborate community-
wide surveys are conducted of local residents
seeking their input on various topics.
In the end, what is produced is a laundry
list of all the problems being experienced by
residents of these communities. The list might
include concerns with the local school system,
the lack of health services, transportation
problems, inadequate child care services, limit-
ed availability of jobs that pay a decent wage,
or the lack of good recreation programs for
children. No matter what community you are
talking about, or how big or small the com-
munity might be in terms of population, com-
munity groups that begin taking a hard look
at their community by first documenting all
of its “problems,” are already starting things
off on the wrong foot.
That’s not to suggest that communities
should try to sweep all their problems under
the rug. What it does indicate is the best way
to effectively address the challenges that face
communities is to have a good knowledge of
the resources available to work on local issues.
So, an important beginning point involves
mapping the assets of the community — the
skills and talents of local residents, as well as
the capabilities available or possible through

WHAT IS COMMUNITY?
When embarking on a CBPR project, one of the first challenges is to define the community of interest. Who is the
population of interest? What are the boundaries of their “community”? Is this a community that is geographically
bounded (city, neighborhood, county) or one that is nongeographically defined by a common culture (Latinos, African
Americans) or condition (parents of children with special needs) or other shared concern? Are you planning to work
with those directly impacted by the issue or with the organizations that represent or serve them? The CBPR approach is
often used to examine issues for underserved populations, to give voice to their concerns and help identify their
perspective on the problem. However one chooses to define “community,” it remains the conceptual underpinning of
CBPR, influencing who collaborates and participates, how sampling is conducted, where dissemination takes place,
and, most importantly, how relevant the work is to the community of interest.

A community coalition in Everett was interested in engaging a researcher to learn more about the health implications
of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on immigrant health in their community. The coalition had a diverse

WHAT IS COMMUNITY?
When embarking on a CBPR project, one of the first challenges is to define the community of interest. Who is the
population of interest? What are the boundaries of their “community”? Is this a community that is geographically
bounded (city, neighborhood, county) or one that is nongeographically defined by a common culture (Latinos, African
Americans) or condition (parents of children with special needs) or other shared concern? Are you planning to work
with those directly impacted by the issue or with the organizations that represent or serve them? The CBPR approach is
often used to examine issues for underserved populations, to give voice to their concerns and help identify their
perspective on the problem. However one chooses to define “community,” it remains the conceptual underpinning of
CBPR, influencing who collaborates and participates, how sampling is conducted, where dissemination takes place,
and, most importantly, how relevant the work is to the community of interest.
Example 1: Everett Immigrant Health
A community coalition in Everett was interested in engaging a researcher to learn more about the health implications
of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on immigrant health in their community. The coalition had a diverse
membership, including agency directors, school administrators, several teachers, and representatives from several

As a way of experiencing the Humanities beyond your classroom, computer, and textbook, you are asked to do a certain type of “cultural activity” that fits well with our course and then report on your experience. Your instructor will require you to propose an activity and get instructor approval before you do it and report on it (students should look for any instructions in that respect). Every effort should be made to ensure that this is a hands-on experience (not a virtual one), that this activity fits the HUM 112 class well, and that the activity is of sufficient quality for this university course. The two (2) key types of activities are a museum visit or a performance.

: This must not be a report on the same activity (and certainly not the same report) as done for another class, like HUM 111. For instance, one might go to the same museum as done for HUM 111, but this HUM 112 report will focus on entirely different works and displays.
Visit a museum or gallery exhibition or attend a theater, dance, or musical performance before the end of Week 10. The activity (museum or performance) should have content that fits our course well. Have fun doing this.
Write a two to three (2-3) page report (500-750 words) that describes your experience.
Clearly identify the event location, date attended, the attendees, and your initial reaction upon arriving at the event.
Provide specific information and a description of at least two (2) pieces.
Provide a summary of the event and describe your overall reaction after attending the event.
Use at least the class text as a reference (additional sources are fine, not necessary unless required by your content). Your report should include connections you make between things observed in your activity and things learned in the course and text.
Note
: Submit your cultural activity choice to the instructor for approval before the end of Week 5 (earlier is even better). Look for guidance from the instructor for how or where to make your proposal. You may also seek advice from your instructor (provide your town / state or zip code) for a good activity in your general area.
Visiting a Museum
It makes sense to approach a museum the way a seasoned traveler approaches visiting a city for the first time. Find out what is available to see. In the museum, find out what sort of exhibitions are currently housed in the museum and start with the exhibits that interest you.
If there is a travelling exhibition, it’s always a good idea to see it while you have the chance. Then, if you have time, you can look at other things in the museum.
Every effort should be made ahead of time to identify a museum that has items and works one can easily connect to our HUM 112 class and book. Since HUM 112 covers from 1600 AD to the present, it makes more sense to focus on items from this time frame. In general, museums with fine arts work better than history museums.

Homeless Hounds is a New York not-for-profit charitable corporation that places rescue and shelter dogs in loving homes. The organization grew out of its founder’s desire to save dogs destined for euthanasia in Southern shelters. Operating out of a single location in Oneida County, HH arranges for the transport of dogs from North Carolina and Tennessee to New York. Prior to their arrival, the dogs are given vaccinations, spayed or neutered and tested for heartworm disease. Behavioral tests are occasionally performed, but are rarely documented. Once in New York, the dogs are advertised for adoption via the HH website and its Facebook page. Adoptions cannot be finalized on-line, although applications can be completed and transmitted through the website, which also accepts donations via PayPal.
Kimberly Stevens is a New Hampshire resident with a four year old son who regularly checked the HH website and followed the organization on Facebook. Kimberly was an animal lover who had become intrigued by the HH business model; she had also made a couple of small donations to the charity via its website. One morning, as Kimberly viewed the list of new adoptable dogs on the HH homepage, she saw a beagle named Buddy and immediately fell in love. Kimberly clicked on the “Adoption Application” button and proceeded to fill out the on-line form, which she then transmitted to HH electronically.
Several days later, Kimberly was notified via email that her application had been approved. She was instructed to contact HH and make arrangements to meet Buddy. If all went well, she would be free to take him back to Pennsylvania. Thrilled about the prospect of a new family member, Kimberly and her son made the four hour drive from their home to Oneida County the following Saturday. They met Buddy, who greeted them with a wagging tail and lots of excitement. Kimberly asked one of the rescue’s volunteers about Buddy’s temperament and disposition. She was told Buddy was a great dog and that “he got along well with children.” And the HH volunteer also said she would not hesitate “to leave Buddy alone with her own toddler.” Satisfied that she had picked the perfect dog, Kimberly paid the $300 adoption fee, put a new collar on Buddy and proceeded to secure him and her son in the car for the drive back to New Hampshire.

And the one activity that I believe I would put into effect is making sure children participated in play-based activities each day in my classroom. I want to make sure the children know that they are going through a very important stage in their life.
Core Value #2 – Respect the dignity, worth, and uniqueness of each individual (child, family member, and colleague)
To successfully practice this specific core value I would make it my mission in learning about each individual that came in and out of my classroom; including the children’s family members and my colleagues because by getting to know one another we learn about different features within different cultures or religions and this could be a very important learning process for young children. One way of doing so is to employ a show and tell where each child could bring in something that maybe they wear differently or an object that displays how they celebrate the common holidays within their culture differently.

This is another important value to carry out inside of your classroom, I feel that it goes hand in hand with the core value above. Because I believe it is very important that we, as future early childhood educators, teach the students in our future classrooms to never just look at the color of someone else’s skin or look at another individuals religious beliefs as wrong just because they are different. If I asked myself, do I have an array of different colored materials such as paint, paper, play dough, crayons, or markers, would I be able to say yes? I would like to be able to say yes, so to reflect on the variety of skin tones, eye color, and hair color within society.
