CROSS MEDIA CONVERGENCE Ownership

Ownership!!!!

Cross media convergence/
synergies!!!!
“Media production is dominated by global institutions, which
sell their products and services to national audiences.” To what
extent do you agree with this statement?
• Mainstream: Agree because…huge money to put into expensive production (technologies, big
action scenes, cast) …..£150-200 to produce the film….shot in different countries to have global
appeal = hence appeal to national audiences. Also make games/phones (cmc/s) to get more
money (and buzz about film)
• Independent: Disagree because…..smaller budgets, production is usually inexpensive and quick,
they appeal to local audiences because they are more niche. However, they have access to high
quality equipment to produce good/high quality films (such as arri alexa) However, it could be
argued because a lot of audiences like indie films and are bored/dislike the ‘big production values’
of big blockbuster films. Usually produced by local/small film production companies/studios so
don’t have global appeal.
• Changing industry: Tangerine – independent filmmakers being able to produce high quality films
on iphones (using anamorphic adapters) – all cheap and accessible equip. Therefore they can
produce good films and therefore compete with mainstream/indie films.
• Netflix/amazon – now producing their own films/TV shows (because they are now huge global
institutions)
Curzon home cinema
• I got this e-mail today =
They rely on traditional forms of
media to market their products
(e-mails to members) – still using
dig technology but is this
effective?
Consider the type of audience….
What is changing industry?
• It is not ‘mainstream’ or ‘indie’….it’s institutions and films that are a
‘new/different’ area….
• Amazon fire TV stick
• Pop up cinema and secret cinema
• ‘independent Hollywood’
• Tangerine and ‘prosumers’
Think about how film industry has changed
