This document discusses and analyzes two music magazine articles. The first article features an interview with Tonight Alive's lead singer Jenna McDougall. It provides personal insights into who Jenna is rather than just discussing her band's new album. Article Analysis…
My first selected article is from Kerrang! magazine. The interview is conducted regarding the ‘Songs
that Saved my Life’ section of the magazine. This issue had Tonight Alive’s lead singer, Jenna
McDougall.
Personally, I adore this article as it gives us an insight into who Jenna is as a person as oppose to a
new Tonight Alive album or tour. The fact that we get to bond on a level that is familiar to us all
(music), is indicative to how grounded the singer is. Furthermore, I believe it’s very interesting
discovering the music taste that these singers obtain; do they listen to the genre of music that they
produce? In this case, it is evident that they do not (to an extent) as Tonight Alive’s pop rock antics
have been blanketed by the fact that Jenna listens to Bob Marley the reggae icon. The selected
interview is evidently a Q&A but with very open answers.
Things to take from this would be that perhaps personal articles are the way forward as an
alternative to album interviews or tour information given by the artist; I personally prefer exploring
the artists themselves during an interview.

The second article is another Kerrang! example but this time refers to rock sensations Bring Me the
Horizon. The article regarding Bring Me’s appearance at Reading and Leeds, their performance in
Wembley and the future including there (previously) upcoming album, That’s the Spirit.
I do enjoy reading this article thoroughly as Bring Me the Horizon are one of my favourite bands but I
prefer the alternative option. This is primarily due to the lack of intimacy between the artist and the
reader within this article; within the other provided double page spread, you delve into Jenna’s
personality whereas, the primary intention of this article is to give an insight onto the production of
their new album. We can particularly tell this by the lack of quotation marks on this page as, if there
were more, the story would be told by the artist as oppose to the writer. Many quotes gives an air of
intimacy as it appears as if the artist is speaking directly to you instead of there being the middle
man in the form of a writer.
I have discovered that an abundance of quotations is an abundance of intimacy; if I were to create
an air of familiarity between the reader and the artist, I would have to include more quotes (the
other article is almost quotes in its entirety).

While analysing these two covers, there are numerous features that you may notice. Said features
are differences, similarities and general comparisons. To begin, the main image on both of the
articles uses direct address well; all models are looking into the camera and creating a musk of
intimacy already. This perhaps is slightly more appropriate for article 1 as the strong use of
quotation marks gives the opinion of Jenna speaking directly to the readers.
Secondly, a large difference between the two would be the house style and colour scheme. For
article 1, the general established theme of Kerrang! was discarded in order to present this very
medicinal vibe to facilitate the coverline ‘The Songs that Saved my Life’. The borders of each page
consist of heart monitor lines while the primary colour scheme is red and white, similar to
stereotypical emergency services and health services. On the other hand, article 2 seems to have
followed the themes conveyed by both Kerrang! and rock music. We can tell this as rock music is
seen to be very dark, dim and somewhat depressing; the colour scheme predominantly consists of
black and white. These colours connote to the previously established meanings by rock music.
