Artist Mise-en-scene
At the start of the photo-shoot I had my main model wear very basic
looking makeup. I liked this idea due to the fact that I want my
magazine to be based purely on music with only a little bit of focus
on the appearance and the fashion side of fame. Due to this is I had
Laura wear minimal makeup right at the beginning. However as the
photo-shoot progressed I asked her to put on some lipstick as I
thought this would give her the typical “fame” appearance and meet
the codes and conventions of a typical artist more. I knew what type
of photo I wanted to use on my front cover and I knew what clothing
item I wanted Laura to wear. I had seen many photos when looking
at image ideas of people in high-necked tops or jumpers. From this I
thought that it was a good idea to have an indie artist in very
simplistic comfy clothing.
I also wanted my model to
change her outfits so that it
would have an element of
differentiation to the
magazine. The colour of the
background which my artist
was against also changed to
red. I thought that this was a
good idea due to the fact the
colour red had a lot of
connotations to music. To add
too that I thought that the
background also went nicely
with the colour of
Laura’s lipstick. With my
models outfit I thought that
it would be a good idea to
get her to wear some
dungarees and a grey long
sleeve top. Again, I believed
that this would’ve clearly
represented the casual
person Laura is. To add to
that it shows how this
magazine is about the
contents and what the artist
says not what the artist
looks like.
Finally I chose to use a range of different
coloured lights to make my magazine
appear more ‘indie’ and unique fitting the
music genre of my magazine (indie and
alternative). I also decided to put a French
plait in my artists hair and I believed this
would make her look different and casual,
however still elegant with the braid. Finally
the watch on her wrist and the chair are
extra ‘rustic’ features that have been added
for detail.
