McFly
This image has good balance because there are two
of the band members on either side of the image
when it is split down the centre. The high-key
lighting and direct address welcomes the audience
into the image; this suggests that the band is a pop
band as they are warm and welcoming. They are also
wearing fashionable clothes and are in a relaxed
setting surrounded by trees which also represents
the pop genre because it has a happy and relaxed
feel.
The Neon Trees
The alternative rock genre is dominant in this image
through the band’s costumes and the colour black. The
photograph is also well balanced as it can be split
equally down the middle so that two band members
are on either side, with the two members with black
hair in the middle and the two with brown on the
outer side. This use of proxemics also portrays the rock
genre as the colour black is in the centre. The
background is also a dull shade of blue unlike the
previous image’s bright, relaxed background.
Paloma Faith
The pop/rock genre is represented through the colours of
red and black from her hair, gloves, makeup and headdress.
She is not looking into the camera and so is not addressing
the audience. This creates mystery and a fantastical mood,
along with her unusual makeup and rabbit ears on her
headdress. The image is well lit from the front which
suggests the pop genre as it is bright and light hearted. The
background, however, is grey and dark which contrasts with
the high-key lighting and portrays the rock genre rather than
pop. The image is well balanced because the model is in the
centre and the positioning of her hands and the ears on her
headdress are symmetrical. Her hair is also split evenly over

to the right which makes the right side heavier than the left. The
background is also heavier on the right as it is coloured on the
right side but it is white on the left.

The rule of thirds has been used well on this image as
attention is drawn to the model’s face in the top right-hand
corner. The rock genre is portrayed in this image due to the
dark, grey background and the model’s heavy eye makeup.
In contrast to this, high-key lighting is used to light the
model from the front and she is wearing bright colours. This
suggests the genre of pop because it is bright and
welcoming towards the audience. She is also looking directly
into the camera and so, directly addressing the audience.
Her facial expression is fun and light hearted as he is smiling
and sticking her tongue out which portrays the pop genre.
Busted
Very high-key lighting has been used on the image which
makes the model’s faces look bleached and pale. They are
looking directly into the camera directly addressing their
audience but they look serious and intimidating. This
suggests the rock genre as they seem to be intimidating
their audience rather than welcoming them which is
stereotypical of rock. The band’s coloured suits and styled
hair suggests the pop genre as they show a group identity
and are following a popular style. The image has good
balance as it could be split down the middle and have two
band members on either side of the model in the middle.
