1. Arctic Monkeys
This image is of the alternative/rock band Arctic
Monkeys. The mise en scene of this image
suggest a 1980/90’s look has tried to be
recreated, in order to appeal to a slightly older
demographic. This is effectively created through
the use of the vinyl cd the lead singer is holding,
this has strong connotations of older rock music,
as vinyl’s were very popular during these times.
Also the outfits and hairstyles of the band
members are quite reminiscent of the 1980’s
period. The bomber and denim jackets give the
image quite a vintage look, along with the rose
embellished shirt the lead singer is wearing.
Beyoncé
This image is of the world famous,
mainstream pop artist Beyoncé, who is an
extremely recognisable artist. A very minimal
look has been created through the black and
white effect the image has been given. This
simplicity is also highlighted by the clear lack
of make up Beyoncé is wearing, which makes
the image more striking. Also because this is a
close up image, it appears she is wearing no
clothes, which may be trying to appeal to a
male audience, as it is quite a provocative
image. Also, direct mode of address is being
used which is effective as it engages the
reader.
Artist/Band Image Analysis
Mumford and Sons
This image is taken from the album art from
Mumford and Sons latest album ‘Babel. Their genre
of music is mainly folk, which is quite a unique,
unheard genre today. This genre of music is reflected
by the traditional mise en scene of this image. For
example, the old barn/farmhouse in the background,
the horses, and flags hung across the buildings and
vintage suitcases. All of these elements suggest the
picture is from the 19th
century, when fold music was
popular. The crowded movement in the background
suggests the setting is a fair/festival, which is in
keeping with the music theme. Also, this movement
is blurred in order to keep the focus on the band in
the foreground. The costumes of the band members
also look quite vintage and traditional which is in
keeping with the folk genre.
The Pretty Reckless
This image is from the album artwork of the rock
band The Pretty Reckless. The rock genre is
effectively conveyed through the bold, black
clothing e band members are wearing, the colour
black has strong relations to the rock genre and
darkness. The female band member however is
wearing a white shirt, which contrasts effectively to
the black; this makes clear that she is the lead
singer. Also, the facial expressions of the band
members are quite dull and sombre, therefore
reflecting the dark, aggressive nature of rock music.
2. One Direction
This is an image of the mainstream boy band One
Direction. The image was taken for use on the bands
album artwork. The mise en scene of the image
presents them as a fun and exciting band, due to the
proxemics, as some are climbing on top of the phone
box. The facial expressions are all happy and it is
clear they are having fun, this fits with the pop genre.
The style that has been created in the picture is
overly British, due to the costumes of the band
(waistcoats and bow ties) and the use of the red
telephone box. The image appeals to a younger age
range through the exciting, playful mise en scene.
